WordPress.com sites inaccessible in Turkey…

  • Some WordPress.com users in Turkey are reporting that their sites are not accessible. In the past, we have experienced service disruptions in Turkey as a result of government censorship of the internet, which the government implements in a very expansive and arbitrary manner. We often do not have advance notice of blocking/censoring actions, and that’s the case now. We are working to resolve the issue using all legal and technical means at our disposal. We’re just as frustrated as you are and will keep you posted as we learn more. In the meantime, you may be able to access blocked sites by using some of the measures we’ve outlined here: https://support.wordpress.com/bypassing-internet-restrictions/ .

  • Update: We have learned this service disruption is, in fact, the result of Turkish censorship.

The government sought to take down a small number of sites we host. After providing us extremely minimal advance notice and before we could respond, a block on our IP addresses was implemented throughout Turkey. This disrupted nearly all sites hosted at WordPress.com, not just those targeted by the Turkish authority, Telekomünikasyon İletişim Başkanlığı.

We are continuing to do all we can to restore access in Turkey. We appreciate your patience.

  • Five WordPress.com sites remain blocked by Turkish Internet Service Providers on government orders in this case.

For all other WordPRess.com sites, this issue is resolved and we are now back online in Turkey.
