word document (.ODT) hide personal details

  • I have had a few searches through the forums and support sections but cannot find this mentioned. I am trying to upload a document. I have accomplished this using office starter 2010, saved as an .odt document.
When I preview, it warns of safety/security from this internet site ( being me not WP, fair enough) in a header with an edit button. when I click on the warning it shows personal details in a side column. The edit button allows changes to be made to the document. if I were to publish, is this header warning and edit button visible and available for everybody else, including my personal details?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give,

  • I can’t answer this question without without the link to your Odt file ,
and I understand if it showing “personal information” you may not want to post it here.
    but i’ll try to help

when uploading Odt, Doc, or PDF file its typically done the same way you would do a finished image or picture file, from your computer.
either in the post or page editor by clicking the upload file icon on the top right of the editor box
or by going to the left column of your dashboard–>Media –> Add new.

*So make sure your Odt is in your media library
(f.Y.I you can see files in your media library dash–> media–>library.)

Odt is very similar to Doc files. When someone downloads a file to his computer or to his editor (and there are many different editors)
    they CAN change the document.

As for personal information, its hard to say without seeing your document, but if you have any personal info saved on your draft that was uploaded, any bookmarks will still be on the draft for people to see
. Make sure you remove the stuff you don’t want published before your final save before uploading…. including authoring info, if you don’t want that attached to the file,

The editing button, and header warning is probably the feature of your editor software… there are many and they all look a little different. (Open Office Writer is an example of an editor that uses odt and docs)

Hope that helps a little bit.

  • Just some additional info to consider… PDF format is one of the most common file types to create a downloadable document on the Web.
Its much much harder to change a PDF document than Doc or Odt. and most people can view them right in their Internet browser, very easily.

I do not know how to export documents to PDF in window 7 software, but its worth checking out as an alternative to Doc or Odt.

  • Thank you dlager, that is very helpful. I did manage to remove the personal information, but then it shows the personal info of who modified the information (me!) and I cannot see how to get rid of that!

Thanks again and I’ll look at pdf instead. the document is 6569 words long so I would rather not type it out. I also had an issue with double spacing, but I’ve found a bit on the forum to resolve that.

    Thanks again,
