    I cannot figure out how to put widgets anywhere else than in the sidebar.

    Different themes allow for different widget arrangements.

    Some themes only support having the widgets in the sidebar. Others will allow you to put the widgets in the footer. You may have to experiment with different themes to get the widget arrangement that you are looking for.
