Why is my domain name with wordpress.com and Wild West Domains?

  • I can see that I pay 18 euros a year to wordpress for domain mapping and domain registration. Through the ‘WHOIS’ search I see that Wild West Domains is the registrar. Can anyone explain if I am somehow paying twice for my domain name?

    many thanks

  • Hi there, WildWestDomains is WPcom’s registrar for the domain that you purchased. You aren’t paying twice for the same domain name.

It looks like you have a grandfathered plan for domain registration with mapping, so as long as you keep renewing that plan, you should be able to continue as you are now. If you let that plan lapse, you’ll need to purchase one of the new(ish) upgrade plans instead.

Let us know if you have any other question about this.

  • Thanks for your response.

I would like to close my wordpress website as I sell photos online here: https://www.jingoo.com/sharon-young-photography/ and my clients are directed there from my wordpress site.

If I close wordpress, can you explain what happens to my domain name?

Can you also tell me what a ‘grandfathered plan for domain registration with mapping’ is please?

  • Hi there, a number of years ago it was possible to buy a domain through WPcom and map it to a WPcom site without needing to purchase any other upgrade, like no ads, additional storage or the Custom Design upgrades. Those individual upgrades were retired in favor of bundling several popular options together as the Personal, Premium, Business and eCommerce upgrade plans, which you can see here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Site owners who had purchased the previous individual upgrades could continue to renew them as long as they did not let it lapse. If that happened, they were directed to purchase one of the new upgrade plans.

I’ve flagged this thread for Staff to assist you with available options if you wish to delete your WPcom site but keep your domain. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

  • Hi there, thank you so much for your help. I apologise for finding this so complicated. I have one final question. I have seen that with the current site I use, jingoo, that If you have your own domain name (example: http://www.votre-nom.com), you can create an automatic redirect to that site. From then on your address will become http://www.your-nom.com

This is how I want to proceed and would therefore like to close my wordpress website. Can you advise the order I need to do this in. Is there something I need to do in wordpress first?

    thanks again
    Sharon

  • Hi Sharon,

If you want to keep your domain and point it to your jingoo site first you need to renew it by going to your Purchases page:

    https://wordpress.com/me/purchases

Then you need to point it to jingoo by following these instructions:

    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/change-name-servers/#changing-name-servers-to-point-away-from-wordpress-com

You’ll have to ask from jingoo to provide you their nameservers (DNS).

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

  • You have been really great. Thanks for your support.

    Sharon
