Why do italics so frequently convert themselves to normal text?

Okay: all add-ons disabled, HTTPS unchecked, and just now I looked at a post I had just posted and the italics (and a space) have been removed. I’m not touching the post until I get your okay. Normally I would immediately fix because I hate the sloppy look. The “Discover” in paragraph 1 was italicized. Originally it read:
a subscription to Discover magazine
Now it reads:
a subscription toDiscover magazine
This sure seems like a bug to me.

Oh, one other thing: I composed it in the Visual editor and saved it there. In this case I never opened the HTML editor.

Sorry for the string of messages. I’m a bit distracted. Here’s the post in question:

That post is fine, but it’s early to tell whether the problem is solved. I’ll keep my eye out for a recurrence. Thanks again for all the assistance.

Okay, just now I tried to blog a post:
http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2012/06/13/megs-on-the-sofa-surveying-her-kingdom/
I am using Visual editor. Still no add-ons active in Firefox on the Mac, current versions throughout.
I clicked the “publish” button, which was darkened, and nothing happened. That’s okay: the darkened button is a clue that its turned off temporarily.
It turned back on, I clicked, and the progress wheel started, but with 2 seconds stopped. No posting. Nothing. So I clicked again. Progress wheel started again and this time success.
Any ideas? After the “publish” button brightens, should I wait 5 or 10 seconds for things to settle down? I really don’t grasp what’s happening.

When the button is darkened, the post is auto-saving. it’s probably best to just give it a few extra seconds to complete.

Latest stripping of italic tags: Using visual editor in Firefox, latest version, on Mac running OSX latest version.
This time I noticed it not only stripped the HTML italic tags (along with the space preceding the word), it threw in a /div at the end of what I had entered (I had moved away from Firefox to look at something in Chrome) and had added at the end a div, /div pair. I certainly did not enter those.
I’m baffled. Should I be using some other editor?
I fixed the post—once the damage is done, I don’t see any point in preserving the result, but if I’m mistaken about that, let me know. The post starts with a photo, which I inserted with the Visual editor, if that’s relevant.
This is mildly frustrating (scale of 1 to 10, probably around 3 or 4).

Are you completely writing the post in our editor, or copying and pasting from elsewhere?
-
This one was completely written in the editor. My apologies for not including post identification. It was this post:

The villain was the “would“.
-
Hm, I’m not seeing what would have caused that. The next time it happens, would you please leave it as is?
-
Will do, but in the HTML view, it was simply the word, with no HTML italicizers around it and the space before removed. But I’ll leave it along next, as a draft, so you can also see the /div and div tags.
