The New Sharing Options Thread

  • We like to share things with our friends. Don’t you?

Want a better way to let people share the stuff you write on WordPress.com? Take a look at a few things that were just added in Settings > Sharing (no; that wasn’t there before).

    :)

You can learn more about this new feature in the Support page we’ve created for it at http://support.wordpress.com/sharing/.

If you hit any trouble with this feature or if you have suggestions, please try to collect them in this thread. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • that’s great, thanks

  • Great and I was selective in which button choices. Even the order of the buttons. I chose post + index option for display.

So far, no capability to provide a count like the tweet button of ie. how many times email button was pushed/used on a post? I know, I ask abit much now.

    Thanks so far!

Not right now on the page itself, but feel free to poke around your site stats and you’ll find some additional goodies.

  • But tiny question, please:

I noticed for left-hand aligned image in one of my recent posts, that it automatically places the line of icons in a vertical block :

    Bike Trains

How can I adjust this so that there is a bottom horizontal display of my buttons in the future?

  • Whoa, markel. Yes, I checked under the number of blog subscribers for our biz blog, yes there are the share statistics!

This is better and more discrete for blog administrators. No need to clutter our public displays with tons of statistical counts on our icon buttons.

  • If you had the Tweet button enabled already, it will still be shown at the end of your posts *before* the social icons.

We’re already working on turning that off so you should only have the one Tweet button with the normal sharing set.

(That’s what you were asking about, yes? I see the remainder of the social icons displayed horizontally at the bottom of that post.)

  • This is a great feature – thank you!!

One question – I noticed that my page is still displaying the old “Tweet this” button which is appearing above the new sharing options:

    Torah Tuesdays: Miracles by choice

However, when I went into the Appearances>Extras Menu, there was no longer an option to turn this feature off. Any suggestions on how to remove? Thanks!

  • Oh – I just saw your post, Markel, thanks! And again, love the new feature. Thank you!

  • Reposting in here as requested by markel:

My question is how exactly do we add new service? For the sharing url do we just put the services url (i.e http://www.twitter.com) or do we have to put something more specific in? How do we add the variables to the sharing url?

Also do we need to have our own accounts on these services or will the service re-post that article using that persons (the person who pushed the button) account?

    Appreciate any help in advance.

  • On another blog the icons are shown as a block if there is remaining space for left or right justified photo or text. Some icons are not showing in a horizontal row.

http://cyclewriteblog.wordpress.com More examples of blocks of icons instead of single horizontal row. Just asking for a solution that I could do as a blogger.

Not sure if affected by Windows screen display settings..or theme template.

    Sharing email to another friend:
Great feature by the way. I did a test to someone. He got title, URL, excerpt. Fine.

Plus categories, tags. This is abit much for an email recipient.

It is suggested that WordPress think how to reformat the email message settings so the shared email post message doesn’t look too cluttered. Is it large because it’s to help on mobile devices?

• Thanks for the new sharing options!

  • My question is how exactly do we add new service?

    Thanks for reposting here. :)

The Sharing URL is the URL address to the sharing service. You can use the variables %post_title%, %post_url% and %post_excerpt% in the URL, i.e.

    http://www.google.com/buzz/post?url=%post_url%

Also do we need to have our own accounts on these services or will the service re-post that article using that persons (the person who pushed the button) account?

The service will re-post the article using whatever logins are set on the reader’s side. If I’m logged in to Facebook and click the Like button on your post, it’s marked as Like in my Facebook profile.

I’m seeing only the horizontal rows of icons. If you’re seeing otherwise, what browser and OS are you using? You may want to contact us at http://support.wordpress.com/contact/ so we can get a screen shot from you.

  • I’ll be updating the OP above, but we have a Support page for this new feature, which is located at http://support.wordpress.com/sharing/.

  • Re icons: I am using IE 7.0 browser.

  • Sorry Windows, but not Vista, 1 version back I think.

  • Hi again,

Just quickly regarding the sharing url for my clarification. For examples sake let’s use twitter.

What is the correct format to use the variables and does this format differ between each service (and when you want to use multiple variables)?

For example you have this for google buzz: http://www.google.com/buzz/post?url=%post_url%

Would this be correct for twitter: http://www.twitter.com/post?url=%post_url%

Hope you can help me out again.

• So, the page on Sharing says that a number of sharing options are enabled by default (Twitter, Facebook, Reddit), but all I see is Email and Print and the “Add more” button.

Do I have to go through and add the other ones myself?

  • Just quickly regarding the sharing url for my clarification. For examples sake let’s use twitter.

As Twitter is a built-in option already in the Sharing settings, is there something we missed there that you’d prefer to see?

Would this be correct for twitter: http://www.twitter.com/post?url=%post_url%

That won’t work; it has a different query structure. Unfortunately, I’m getting failwhaled at the moment when trying to test with Twitter, so I can’t tell you at the moment what you’d need to do.

Please do tell us if we missed something you’re looking for with the Twitter functionality, though.
