What is the easiest way to change the type of font (Arial, Helvetica, etc.)?
-
Can this be done without going to the HTML, e.g., by highlighting text and selecting font type from a list?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No. If you just want to change a paragraph or two, you’d have to learn a little bit of code.
Note that to change the font on your whole site you’d need the CSS upgrade (best to have some experience with CSS before you buy):
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/You pay for upgrades per blog per year. For that upgrade: $30.—

That would be the ‘easiest’ way, but you can also manually type the tags to do it. Going that route requires precision though or things can get messy.
-
Correct, but the original poster wanted to know if there was a “highlight and select” method to change the font family. There is not.

Answering just the question in the title:
What is the easiest way to change the type of font (Arial, Helvetica, etc.)?
it would be the CSS upgrade…

Especially easy because the upgrade includes typekit, so perhaps the that would work well for the original poster:
