what is an WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) file?
-
Hi. I’m moving a wordpress blog that was hosted elsewhere to wordpress.com. I’d like to import all post and such from my previous blog but wordpress.com is asking for a “WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) file.” Is that something I can pull from my former configuration from my old host?
Thank you so much in advance.

This much I know: if you had a wordpress blog hosted elsewhere then it was a wordpress.org blog which is written in a different code than wordpress.com blogs. http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1
As for what to do next I do not know the answer. Starting with your former host or with sending an email to wordpress.org support may be the way to go.

you can export it from your old wordpress configuration (if you still have it) by installing this plugin:
http://www.technosailor.com/wordpress-to-wordpress-import/
it will create a wp-export tab under ‘manage’ in your dashboard.
additionally, you may have difficulty with caregories and authors importing correctly. i’d suggest creating a test blog and trying the import there before messing up your primary blog. my experiences are here:
