Weird followers
-
Hi lfwilliamswa,
I know this is incredibly annoying, but I also want to reassure you that there is no way these spam followers can put your site, your content or your private account data in any danger. It just increases the number of email notifications WordPress.com needs to send out for each new post, so if anything it’s an attempted attack on us trying to overload our email servers, not on your site.
-
I have had several of the odd looking email (e.g:(email visible only to moderators and staff).) ‘followers’ over the past several days and today a note that there was an attempted sign in to my blog from another province. I do not see the followers in my email followers list.

Just wondering, could it be that some staff members either from the Google Console team (who are supposed to use robots to map out our webpages as requested by us) or even from wordpress themselves who need to visit our platforms for techinical reasons, have to access them through such portals and then the system generates that kind of alert as a result?
If this is the case, then wordpress just has to spell it out. I personally don’t think it’s a big deal.
If this is not the case, then would it be possible that we’re being ‘watched’ either by competitors to wordpress or worse…? -
What I find interesting is that I put forth a solution to the problem a few posts back and never received a reply: Why not just put in one of those “I am not a robot” checkers when someone goes to subscribe to a post? How hard would that be? And boom, problem solved!
Why isn’t WordPress responding to this very simple suggestion?

FSAT:
If that is the case, then that explains why none of us are seeing these attempts in our followers tab. Comforting.
As long as they can’t “back-door” into the platform, there is no vulnerability, I guess.
Thank you for your reply.

Simple question – why not put in a “Are you a robot?” barrier to new subscribers? That would completely solve the problem. What’s preventing that?
-
That’s a good idea! Let’s hope wordpress admin take it on board. I’m sure wordpress would like us to continue with our sites with minimal fuss.

This is my site: welcometoreadblog.wordpress.com
I am having the same issue. Got nearly 5-6 followers in last couple of days. Here are a few :
(email visible only to moderators and staff), (email visible only to moderators and staff), (email visible only to moderators and staff), (email visible only to moderators and staff).
What action needs to be taken on this? Is my site under risk? -
Hi, I’m still facing the issue of outlook-email followers. Is there anyway it can be resolved?

NOTE: These are annoying, but appear to have already been BLOCKED on the WordPress side.

barbstruestories I would not ignore and attempted sign in. I would change my password if I were you. This thread is addressing weird “followers”, WordPress is taking care of those by deleting them as soon as they follow a blog.
-
Exactly same thing is happening. I got 6 outlook followers with weird long addresses in the past 3 days. And another problem is I am not able to view them to remove/block them.
The blog I need help with is

In the past 48 hours I have had a steady stream of new email followers with odd email addresses.
So I just delete these do I? -
Hi guys
So pleased I’ve found this thread. I have been getting loads of these outlook.com followers too: (email visible only to moderators and staff); (email visible only to moderators and staff); (email visible only to moderators and staff); (email visible only to moderators and staff) to name a few.
Why would anyone want to spam a wordpress blog?
Is the only option to go through and delete followers? I actually nearly missed a couple of genuine followers when going through these!
-
Just to add to the above, after reading through the posts on here I decided to remove the latest email followers. However, I can’t locate them? They are not showing in “email followers” in the “People” tab? Am I looking in the correct place?

Hi keyimagephotographers –
What you are seeing is the expected behavior. These are not real followers they are spam. Because of that we are removing them as they come in, so they don’t actually make it to your blog as a follower. I hope that helps.

You do not need to do anything. These are spam followers and we are removing them automatically as they come through. They don’t even make it to your “followers” list.
