Website update for transferred domain

I have a website on WordPress with a domain that was registered with WordPress. If I transfer that domain to somewhere else to host, where do I go to make updates/changes to my website, i.e. can I still make website updates in WordPress afterwards? Could someone explain how website updates work on a transferred domain? Thank you.

Hi Suri!

It’s entirely up to you.

If you transfer your domain, you can either map that domain to your WordPress.com site and host it here…or…you can also move your website to another host.

If you choose to move your domain, but host your site here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

If you choose to move your domain, AND your website, you can export your WordPress.com content and possibly upload it to a new site:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

If I choose to move my domain elsewhere but host my site with WordPress, do I still have to pay my annual domain name registration with WordPress (because I would need to have that WordPress site to make updates, right)? Sorry, I am confused.

Hey again,

First question — why are you moving your domain? Perhaps if I understand the purpose behind the domain move, I can help further.

If you DO move your domain, you do not have to pay for renewing its registration here.

However, if your domain is hosted on another server, you DO need to map your domain to your WordPress.com site. That is a $13 charge.

The reason is because WordPress does not take domain transfer. I would like to transfer the domain registered elsewhere to WordPress but since that is not possible, I am weighing my options. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

Ok, I thought you were referring to your domain registration here for surilunde.com because of the original question below:

I have a website on WordPress with a domain that was registered with WordPress.

If you have another domain that you’re referring to, you can house that wherever you wish. Then, you can map that to your WordPress.com site. Domain mapping of a domain registered outside of WordPress.com will cost $13, as I mentioned earlier.
