Use AWS Nameservers for a subdomain?

  • I currently have a domain example.com that is mapped to my example.wordpress.com site. I’d like to add a subdomain sub1.example.com that uses AWS nameservers. I saw some instructions for subdomain mappings at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#scenario3, but they all use CNAME or A records. Is it possible to use NS records?

  • Hi there, what is the domain name in question? I do not see any WordPress.com sites or any plans or upgrades on the account you are logged in here with. If I have that, I can get with one of our domain gurus and find out if this is doable.

  • Hi! This question does relate to a domain registered in another WordPress account, but I’d rather not share the domain name in the forums because this work is for a client and I’d like to maintain their privacy.

To clarify my question, the client has registered their domain example.com with WordPress. Under in the DNS configuration for that domain, we would like to add an NS record with map.example.com as the key and a list of 4 external nameservers for its value. Is that possible for us to set up with WordPress domain management tools?

  • Hi @azaveatemperate, I’m not seeing the NS option for the types of records that can be added to a subdomain. But we’re digging a bit more on that for you.

Note you can add A records or CNAME records if that’s supported by the other host.

  • I’ve confirmed this isn’t possible with our current tools for regular WordPress.com sites (though it may work fine for VIP). I’m going to file a feature request, and though it likely wouldn’t be fulfilled soon enough for this client, we could follow up with you when it is.

If you’d like to send more details privately, let us know and we’ll reach out via email.

  • Hi @supernovia, thanks for following up! Talking via email would be great.

  • Hi azaveatemperate – No problem. I’ve just sent a note your way.
