Uploading Custom Themes

  • Its my first time really using wordpress … I design and code websites so I understand how to make a theme but Im confused as to how I go about implementing

I already found a hosting company that will instal wordpress and allow me to upload on there end but whats the steps I have to take on the wordpress end (ie buy the bundle or just the url mapping? Do I need to buy the custom design package?)

Thanks for all your help in advance

  • Please understand that there is no upgrade you can purchase form WordPress.com that will change anything stated here > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs nd we cannot install individual plugins or third party themes into them. Those found on the internet are for WordPress.ORG installs which run on different software.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

On free hosted wordpress.COM blogs we can only use the themes which have been coded to run on this multi-user software and made available to us here. > Appearance > Themes and no others. We cannot edit either themes or templates on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

If you wish to have complete control over a blog, FTP access, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.

  • To move a blog see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/
Are you leaving WordPress.com? Would you like to redirect yourblogname.wordpress.com (as well as all of your permalinks) to your new domain name? Have you recently changed your blog address and need to redirect traffic to the new name? The Site Redirect upgrade lets you do just that http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

  • Thank you for your help sorry if these questions seem a little rudimentary but im new to word press. So two more questions …

    1. If I host through my own web host I can log in upload my php files but to update the blog I can still use the word press admin to log in a blog / tag/ the tracking that wordpress provides?

    2. if I buy the 99 dollar bundle to use link mapping / space ect. does this apply to all the blogs on that username or do I need to pay for each blog?

    Thanks Again!!

  • 1) you can upload php files or anything else you want – but you would need to log into your own site at your other host NOT at WordPress.COM – note – the log-in and dashboard look almost the same so it can be confusing

    2) the 99 dollar bundle is per WordPress.COM blog and per year – also note the 99 bundle will have nothing to do with anything on your own host.

You can install Jetpack and then use the WordPress.COM stats package on your own hosted site

  • 1. If you hire a webhost and set up a WordPress.org install and move your content into it, that site is not a part of the wordpress.com community. Only free blogs from and being hosted by WordPress.com are part of the wordpress.com community. WoordPress.org and WordPress.org are completely spearate and different > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    2. All upgrades apply only to one blog and are only for one year when they are due for renewal. Purchasing a bundle for a blog you are moving off WordPress.com makes no sense at all.

  • oh maybe I worded this wrong … I know to update the design files I have to log into my web server what I mean is to update the blog post I still log into wordpress?

  • to update the blog post I still log into wordpress?

You need to log into your WordPress install on your own server.

As noted above you also need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG for any WordPress installs not on the WordPress.COM servers. They are the ones that support the WordPress.ORG software – this forum is only for the support of blogs on WordPress.COM servers

  • I think you need to slow down. There is no upgrade at WordPress.com that will allow you to create your own theme. The most you will ever be able to do is edit the CSS of an existing theme. Don’t go buying upgrades you don’t need.

To just make a blog post, that’s easy. Go to Dashboard->Posts->Write New. To learn the basics of blogging with WP.com, check out http://learn.wordpress.com

  • Ohhh I get it …. lightbulb** I was working so much my brain didnnt click on the difference between ORG and COM! Thanks everyone!! you rock!!

  • You’re welcome from me.
