unable to update any text or html widget
-
I no longer can make any changes to widgets. I don’t know what happened?
-It’s not a browser or cache issue because I changed browsers.
-I logged out and logged back in.
-I am able to make changes to posts, and css, but not widgets.Does anyone know what is wrong? It won’t let me save anything.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

A few questions before I head off to my test site:
Can you create a new HTML or Text widget?
What browsers are you using and what OS?
Are you using the Customizer or WP Admin?
-
no, i was unable to create a new one.
chrome and safari
I tried both. I was working in the customizer all morning, and then when started having the issue, tried it with WP admin, and received the same results.
Thanks for responding.

OK-I’m on a Win10Pro PC using Chrome60 (currently updating), so my environment is not the same. I am able to both add a new HTML and Text widget and edit existing widgets.
I’ve gone ahead and tagged this for Staff, but while we are waiting for them, try disabling any browser extensions and see if that helps.
-
no luck, i disabled extensions, and still not able to see any change. Whenever, I change something, and I see the “spin” dial, expecting then to see the change on the page (using the customizer), there is no change on the page, and even though it changed in the widget the SAVE button is not enabled.
-
OK-what makes me wonder is this:
I was working in the customizer all morning, and then when started having the issue,
When you logged out, did you clear your browser cache and cookies and then shut down your browser?
-
no change
I did that earlier, but tried again (being real intentional about it) and still not able to change anything. I have tried both Chrome and Safari. Neither works.
Never had this problem before (hundreds of hours).

I was going to suggest trying a different browser, but it looks like you have already.
Would it be alright if I tried to edit one of your text widgets? What I will do is just add another paragraph to the bottom or something with a single period in it.

yeah, thats find you can even go to this page, this is where it all started…
https://game-of-thrones-episodes.com/706-beyond-the-wall/
All morning I worked on the navigation for the portal, recaps, and scenes (left column, html widget) and got that working (although I still need to make some tweaks, and eventually create a new class button for the upper left buttons. So then when I tried to delete the HBO image on the right column (text widget) since I have it now on the left column, it would not let me do it.
I would greatly appreciate any help.

I give you full permission to access any part of the website, and to make any temporary changes.
Of all people, I should be able to trust you :)

Thanks, I just tried and can’t edit via the Admin dashboard widget area. It allows me to add, but when I save it disappears.
I’ve tried adding a widget, but that doesn’t seem to be showing either although trying to figure out which page to put it on is a bit of a challenge.
I’m wondering if perhaps you have reached the theoretical limit on widgets, or text widgets?
I’m digging into this further.
-
yea, that’s my fear, too.
When I was kid, I always kept popping balloons, never knowing when to quit. LOL. And I don’t think the way I am using the widgets, is what most people do. I really only have season 7 done with seven episodes, and 80 more episodes to go… this might not be good.

You have a number of widgets in the inactive area (down at the bottom of https://gameofthronesportal.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php. Can you look at those and perhaps delete text and custom HTML widgets from there and then see if you can edit a text widget?
The people I need to chat with on this are offline right now, probably sleeping.
-
I am away from computer, but if you want go ahead and delete all those inactive widgets. I give you permission.

Wow, I had problems deleting them, but got it done. Still no joy though. Interestingly I can add an RSS Links widget, but cannot add any text or custom html widgets.
If you are at or near the limit on text/html widgets, we may have to rethink how you have things organized in order to get around the limitation.
-
That would be sad. But I guess also a relief. The project kind of got out of hand. But it was good to do, I learned a lot more about CSS and honed a few skills.
It will be interesting to see what options I have available. I might have to abandon the the Game of Thrones idea altogether and come up with something else. I have some other ideas, but if we go in that direction I might want to explore with you as you suggest how I have things organized.
Keep me posted. Thanks.

I heard back from one of our guru’s on this, and it appears that although you are not at the limit, it is causing some problems (in other words, things get cranky sometimes before the limit).
Is there anyway that you can move some of your text/custom html widget content over and into custom menu widgets? They are saved in a different place, so doing that could take some load off of the text/custom html side of things. I know that would change your styling and the look of your site, but it would be one way to free up some space for things that actually need a text or html widget.
Also, image widgets are in a different area, so any html widgets you have that have images in them could be moved over and free up more space.
