Unable to add Post Tags – related to google script?

    Until recently, I’ve been able to add Post Tags, but recently I’ve found that I can not add tags to new (or edited) posts. I am also no longer able to Preview a new post – when I click Preview for a new post, the result is the Edit Post page, instead. If I edit an already published post, when I click the Preview Changes button, I get the preview post page, but it only shows the PUBLISHED post and does not include my new edits.

    I’m wondering if WordPress now requires the script at http://www.google.com/jsapi to be running in order to get these functions (add post tag, and preview)? This has not been the case in the past, but is it now required? I am allowing scripts from wordpress.com and from quantserve.com, but on principle I refuse to allow scripts from google.

    Anyone?? Anyone?? Is anyone else experiencing an inability to preview new posts? Or the inability to associate post tags with a particular post?

    As mentioned in my message, this is behavior which has recently changed. Both the post preview AND the ability to add post tags USED to work, but no longer.

    Is it because I don’t allow google to run scripts? I’m not interested in allowing google scripts just to find out.

    Any ideas? Please…

    WordPress does not rely on Google for anything.

    Log out of wordpress, clear your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and then try again.

    Also, what browser are you using?

    Thanks for the response! I already tried the suggestions you made, and they made no difference.

    Here’s an update: that’s what I’ve wanted to believe (that WordPress does not rely on google for anything). I got a response from Support stating that same thing: “You don’t need a Google script to be running in order to use WordPress.com functions.”

    However, I’ve done some testing and found that indeed, the google script “jsapi” DOES need to be running in order to have the two functions I mentioned above (adding post tags and previewing new or edited posts). At least on my machine, that’s how it’s looking. I confirmed that by temporarily enabling the google script, and suddenly, magically, both those functions worked again, as they used to. Disable the google script from running, and those two functions are gone again.

    Please, WordPress, I strongly urge you to get Google out of your posting and editing pages. Let them index my posts all they want, after I publish them, but don’t give them a foothold in any page I’m securely logged in to here. Google should have absolutely nothing to do with what I do while logged in to WordPress, and consequently I don’t want to run their scripts (any of them) unless I choose to specifically go TO Google for something.

    For what it’s worth, the location of the (required) google script mentioned in my first post seems to have changed now to https://www.google.com/jsapi It appears to be called from line 40 of the new post page’s source. In the past, it did not need to be running in order to create post tags from the new post or edit post pages, or to use Preview function, but something has changed recently…

    My browser is Flock, “the social browser” built on the Firefox engine.

    Since no one else does, then there is certainly an issue with your machine or your browser. I use Safari and FF on Mac and I never have any issues whatsoever. Flock is a different browser with a lot of things that FF does not have, and has a lot of things going on. Temporarily download and give Firefox a try, or if you have Safari 3 or 4 give that a try. I simply never have any issues with tags or editing/previewing posts.

    I just tried with my copy of Flock and I have no issues. Editing/previewing posts and adding categories and tags works fine.

    I suspect you have a javascript issue on your computer of some sort. Make sure that javascript is enabled in the browser.

    Javascript has to be enabled and running in your browser for those functions to work

    Exactly. I think there is some misunderstanding… I CAN get full function, IF I allow the Google script to run. So there’s no java/javascript issue with my computer or my browser. But I’d rather not have to run a Google script to compose and edit my blog here at WordPress. That’s all I’m trying to point out. If Google were to buy WordPress (please don’t ever let that happen!), then I could understand a requirement to run their scripts here, but as far as I’m aware, Google doesn’t own any interest in WordPress (at least not yet). So please don’t require any scripts from google in order to use WordPress with full functionality.

    I’ve tried using Safari, and you are right, I have no problems with these two functions there. But the REASON for that is that when I’m using Safari with Java and Javascript enabled, I AM running the google script, because the page source calls for it. But I don’t want to have to run a google script in order to access my WordPress blog, and have full functionality on it. MY issue is that in Flock, I use an add-on called NoScript so that I can limit on a selective basis what scripts I’ll allow to run, on a site-by-site basis. And I usually use NoScript in a way that will allow scripts from the site I’m visiting, but NOT from third-party sites. This allows for generally faster and more safe surfing (because I can prohibit third-party scripts from running, unless I need a fuction that script provides). And so when accessing my WordPress blog, NoScript is set to allow scripts from WordPress and Quantserve, but NOT scripts from Google. And with those settings, I do not have the two functions I’ve already mentioned. When I make one change – that is, enable scripts from google – then I DO have those two functions, which shows me that WordPress now requires this script from Google, in order to have the full Preview and post tags function.

    So the whole thing comes down to the fact that I don’t think WordPress should require me to run a script from google in order to have full functionality on my WordPress blog. As I mentioned before, one reason I settled on WordPress as the home for my blog is that WordPress is (or WAS!) independent of Google, while other blog hosts are not. Blogger and Blogspot require a Google account to even sign up for a blog.

    I’m just saying – KEEP WORDPRESS INDEPENDENT OF GOOGLE. Please.

    Here is the bottom line: To work with the wordpress dashboard, javascript has to be enabled for at least the wordpress.COM domain. Why? The editor that wordpress uses is TinyMCE and it is javascript. There are also other dashboard functions that run on javascript, so if you set things so that javascript is disabled, then you cannot effectively use wordpress. Why the google script would have to be allowed I don’t know. The only ones that could answer that is staff. Contact them at http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ .

    I just ran a check in the Post Editor window using Net in Firebug. The Post Editor does indeed call a jsapi script (and a couple more scripts) from Google.

    @ thesacredpath, yes, I understand (of course) the need to have javascript enabled. And I DO have it enabled, for WordPress and for Quantserve, but not for Google (by using the NoScript add-on I can allow/disallow scripts from individual domains on a per site basis). And I’m still unable to get those two functions here on WordPress, unless I enable Google to run scripts also. But, I don’t want google running scripts unless I choose to go to Google.. call me wacky…

    I did contact the Support staff, and have been discussing this with a very patient rep via email. The interesting thing is that she still has the two functions I’ve mentioned even when she disables google from running scripts. I’m scratching my head trying to figure out why I don’t…

    Thanks for that link to the whole geotagging topic. You’re probably right – I also suspect this issue has something to do with that. If it does, then I wish WordPress would base their use of the google scripts on a user’s settings for this geotagging feature in their profile – if they choose not to enable geotagging, then don’t call the google script. As it appears now, the google script is automatically called, regardless of the user’s geotag preferences.

    @ husdal – Thanks for (publicly) confirming that the Post Editor indeed calls scripts from Google. That helps show at least that I’m not a total nut-case! Thanks.

    I agree if the scripts are called for the geotagging, and someone is not using that feature, then the scripts should not be called.
