Trying to upload a theme

    Hi there,

    I already have a WordPress theme from my university, and I want to use it to create a site for a course. I don’t see an option to upload a theme anywhere, and I have been struggling with it for days. Can you help? It is kindof urgent.

    Hi @suddtu, if you want to upload your own theme you must have a self-managed WordPress installation.

    What does this mean?

    Well, there is a little difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. The one major difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org is who’s actually hosting your website.

    With WordPress.org, YOU host your own blog or website. WordPress.org is where you’ll find the free WordPress software that you can download and install on your own web server. With a self-managed instance of WordPress on your own web server, you will be able to install your theme that you got from the university.

    WordPress.com, on the other hand, takes care of all of the hosting for you. You don’t have to download software or manage a web server. However, on WordPress.com you can only use the preinstalled themes and plugins.

    In conclusion, you have 2 options:

    a.) stay with WordPress.com and use the preinstalled themes ( and there are hundred of themes ready to use )
    b.) find a web-hosting provider, install WordPress software from WordPress.org ( is free ) and after that, you will be able to install your own themes and plugins.
