  • You can catch this troll. It’s still plastering http://valeriedavies.com/ comments now while she sleeps in NZ.
    Check her notifier !!!
    Ralph

  • @Ralph,
Trolls are everywhere and it’s not Staff’s job to deal with them at all. We bloggers each deal with our own issues in this regard.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments and it’s there that we use settings to control each and every comment that’s submitted to our blogs via comment moderation. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/
    Comment moderation http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

We starve trolls http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/03/27/how-to-starve-a-troll/ and we mark only spam as spam. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/01/24/mark-only-spam-as-spam/

  • Hi TT :)
To tell you the truth in Settings/Discussions I don’t understand “Comment Blacklist
When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be marked as spam. One word or IP per line. It will match inside words, so “press” will match “WordPress”.
especially when a troll uses different names etc.

I googled the IP of one comment I had and ended up with an address in Pittsburg USA.
    http://www.whoismind.com/ip/209.68.3.253.html

It can’t be too hard to find out exactly who is trolling with technology nowadays and take decisive action. It’s only a matter of will on the part of the Social providers to take on trash such as these people, make their life a misery and protect innocent bloggers from attacks such as Valerie’s. WP is making a fortune from bloggers but when there is a wolf amongst the sheep …sod them !! Let them sort it out themselves !!

    Wrong attitude !!

What you are saying is that WP glorifies trolls. Let them come and ruin bloggers joy of blogging, we don’t care !!

    Ralph

  • re: comment blacklisting
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklist

When using the blacklist one must be aware that you could be affecting legitimate commenters as well. IP addresses have not been unique for nigh unto 15 years now. ISPs place hundreds of us in the same IP block. Moreover, using the blacklist is useless when people can get a new IP or new email address in no time flat and that’s exactly what trolls do.

  • re:glorification of trolls
If you friend had chosen to email Staff at support@wordpress.com this thread would not exist. All threads here on this public support forum are almost immediately indexed by Google and are available to everyone on the internet. Trolls are determined to provoke others into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion. If the troll searches he/she will locate this thread and know they got the response they aimed for.

I recommend Keeping your blogging cool.

  • So using a comment blacklist is a waste of time then !!

A blogger just has to lump it. Spam or Trash the comment on receipt.

Not a solution. The trolls win as far as WP is concerned.

Re: Gloriification. I honestly don’t care about the trash called trolls. There must be a way that WP can take them down. Clear them out of here for good.

As well as Spam or Trash have a Troll button on the comment and send the idiot a 1000 recipes of how to make a chocolate cake with love from WP :) If they receive a few of those they will leave WP alone.

You have whizz kids in Staff and I am sure there is a simple solution and a better one. It’s just a matter of will to do it !!

  • I’m sorry Ralph but the simple solution is called comment moderation. Every blogger has the ability to use it to have total control of everything that’s posted to their blog and ensure nothing unsavory is posted to by using those settings.

Before a comment appears has two different settings. If the first setting is checked, all comments will go into moderation and they will need to be approved by an administrator before appearing on the blog. If the second option is checked, any visitors that have had a comment approved on the blog in the past will get a free pass through approval and only comments from new visitors will go into moderation. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#before-a-comment-appears

  • Okay. Thanks TT.
Valerie will now be waking up in NZ faced with an overnight blitz of useless comments to sort out on her own.

  • You’re welcome. Without doubt allowing anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam and troll comments that any blog will receive. Worse still allowing anonymous commenting provides porno spammers, phishing scheme scammers, identity thieves and and make money sploggers the ability to link drop into comments as well. Once she sets up comment moderation on her blog this will no longer be a problem.

  • I’ll make sure that she reads this thread. Thanks TT. Have a great New Year.

  • Best wishes to you for a Happy New Year too Ralph. :)

  • NO NEED TO REPLY
Just to say thank you Staff. I was hit by almost 400 of those FB troll comments tonight and my dashboard spam caught every one. One click and they were dust. Ralph x

  • FYI

I have been on my own with Akismet here.

Over the last 3 days Akismet has spammed around 3000 weird comments hitting my blog bluefishway.com . I googled 188.143.232.12 and found it originates in St Petersburg Russia. It’s a Spambot as in most comments at least one word is mixed up ie. before = fboere.

A few of these comments entered my notifier, which I did not approve and I clicked “spam”.

I am also using the “Comment Blacklist” box in Settings/Discussions. At the moment I have in the box:

    http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1000
    188.143.232.12
    192.99.2.75
    198.245.51.165

So far no more of these type of comments have entered my notifier.

    Ralph

  • FYI

Since 08:00-22:00 today, 769 spam comments have been placed in my dashboard spam by Akismet. Only one spambot got into my notifier. This one:

    “Lexus Feb 7, 9:33 pm
You’ve really helped me unneastrdd the issues. Thanks.”

WP. You know who all these attackers are. If I can work it out, why can’t you. So why can’t you place a blanket shield around WP. Reading some anti-spam sites, 188.143.232.12 and many others have been well known attackers of WP for years, yet we as unskilled bloggers have to either put up with it, or spam dozens of useless comments in our notifiers which I had to do a while ago. I didn’t want or need hours of unknowledgeable worry at the beginning, days ago. I just want to blog, knowing that there is an umbrella around WP and not even think about these treatable age old comment problems.

I say no more. Except I am disappointed !! Ralph

  • What is the issue? That someone is getting spam? That’s just plain old spam, not trolling. ANYONE with a blog on the internet will get spam. Deal with it.

  • I have dealt with it. No. It’s not plain old spam selling viagra. It’s an attack. 973 weird comments trying to access all my posts from the same addresses in 19 hours. Is that normal spam ? Maybe for you ;)

  • Yeah, that is normal spam.

BTW I am a digital reporter specializing in hackers. Your friend almost certainly has already approved a spam comment, and it is drawing the rest of them.

  • She had 70 in her notifier one night. Since then nothing.

I never approved one. I have had around 5000 over the past few days going into dashboard spam. Any address that got past Akismet I have put on my comment blacklist. I know nothing about hacking and had to learn the hard way by clearing a constant stream of these comments in my notifier by clicking spam on each comment. By blacklisting I hardly get any weird comment come through to my notifier now.

188.143.232.12 is the most prolific. Google it and see for yourself.

  • Spam is going to the Spam folder. So?

  • The topic ‘Troll Alert !!’ is closed to new replies.
