Add topic to favorites
After looking over the ways to password protect my entire blog I have one question. Do my readers (even a paid upgrade to unlimited) HAVE to sign up for their own wordpress account in order to see my site? This feels extreme to me as I would rather just give them a password of some sort.

Can anyone let me know if I am understanding this correctly? I just can’t imagine that someone has to sign up for wordpress themselves just to read my private blog.

Yes, they have to sign up for an account here, but they do not have to sign up for a blog. That is how wordpress keeps track of who can and cannot view your blog. The have to have some way to determine who is and isn’t allowed to view your blog. It really isn’t such a big deal.

I had to sign up for a Google account just to post comments on a couple blogger blogs I follow.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately it is causes a huge problem for me as the readers for this short-term project will not be willing to go through that to see the posts. A lot of these readers barely use a computer, let alone sign up for something.

You’re welcome and the only other choice is to set up the blog as public and then password protect every post using the same password, and then send that password to all the people you want to have access to them. Once they enter the password the first time, they will not have to enter it again unless they clear their browser cookies.

What if I set it to private and then set up a “fake” wordpress account and then gave every single reader that new account name and then the password. Would wordpress or the computer for that matter allow fifty people to sign up under the one account that I listed as “allowed”.

I’m not trying to screw wordpress here, just trying to figure out if there is any way to work around my problem. Ideally, I would just like to be able to give people a user name and password for the entire site.

Thoughts?

You could set the privacy settings to block search engines but allow the public. That way, someone would have to know the url to view the blog and they would not need a password or registration. The only potential glitch is if you link to another site or another site links to you, the search engines will know it and you’ll no longer be a cyber gated community.

Do they know that registration only reguires entering their email and a user name? Have you polled them to see if they object or believe that’s beyond their abilities?
