Theme Recommendations

I will be taking notes when it comes to hearing staff feedback on this one for sure. ;-)

I should have posted my “Often returning theme request” message in here, really…
Like most featured theme designers, I get e-mails from wordpress.com users almost every day. One very common question is how they can get WP-Andreas01 or Daleri Selection (both hosted by the Theme Viewer) into wordpress.com, and I keep on explaining that it is not my decision but something that they must ask for here in the forums.
Until I have Sandbox CSS versions ready, I’m passing on these requests to you!

i don’t know where to find the gpl, but i thought newspress and grungepress look nice.

Ask graphics themes aren’t going to fly because they are not GPL. From their website:
License Information
All templates are free to use as long as you leave the credits unchanged.
You cannot claim these templates or modifications of these templates as yours.You cannot redistribute these templates on your website.
You cannot modify these templates and distribute them.

@sulz
The theme you suggest is not GPL. This is what it says about grungepress:What happens after you pay? How do I get the theme?
After payment you will be redirected to a download page and the download link will be sent to your email. I will give email support if you need help setting up the theme. -

I have no idea where the licensing info is but I love this theme:

@Vivian
Thus far we have two designers who are being approached for updates of their themes by so many people that they have posted to the forum requesting that wordpress.com offer the Andreas01and Fauna (updated).andreasviklund has stated:

Joen has stated:
Fauna is now 1.0 final. The license states that it’s freely portable to WordPress.com, should you be interested. Get in touch with me if I can be of assistance.The Neat theme was finally tidied up and the flowers that the designer intended to be there were put back into the theme causing happiness for those who had made headers to coordinate with them. Immediately, the men who began using the theme when it was lacking the flowers reacted negatively to the flowers being put where they were intended to be.
Here’s Mark’s response https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=1931&page=2&replies=45#post-144733
So if the updated version of The Journalist is offered then I imagine there will be those you may not like it. And, IMO it’s unlikely that wordpress.com is going to offer multiple versions of any particular theme.
Good luck. :)

could we not have some themes that are more header oriented, what
about some more themes with flowers or hopefully pets, I have blogs
for both these topics and just cannot find anything that is interesting
or what about recipes ? It would be nice to be able to find themes
that actually depicted some hobbies as templates.

@charade
Way back on page one of this thread staff requested that we use this link to locate themes that we wanted to see adapted to run on wordpress.com software. Take a look and see what you can find http://themes.wordpress.net/Also note that we currently have 26 themes with customizable headers and you can make a dog, cat, recipe, flowers header to use on them right now http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/08/which-themes-can-i-add-a-header-image-to/

@buddejosh
Hi again,
Please note what tellyworth (staff) says in the original post in this thread. In order to be considered for adaptation so they can run on wordpress.com software, the themes must be GPL licensed and cannot have have any sponsored links that the designer specifies cannot be removed in them.Do you have a link to the licensing information for the theme you are requesting? If so, please post it. Tx :)

timethief: thanks for heads-up. just wondering though, if a theme is not gpl, does that mean one cannot replicate it by css? assuming one has the knowledge…
thesacredpath: i agree, it’s really so nice, though i prefer flowery stuff to newspaper-ish layouts.

I personally wouldn’t adapt a CC-Attribution theme because with CSS alone, I can’t add a link to the original author that would display in all browsers. I suppose I could make it a condition of use for end-users to add the link, but it would have to be in their blogroll rather than their footer. More intrusive, and I can’t guarantee that they would do as they’re told (adding links is more hassle than not-deleting them). And that wouldn’t be fair on the original author.
The full text of the GPL is at http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html. Basically, though, anything which restricts commercial use or requires you to retain any links is not going to fly.

There’s a great, free Blogger template by carl Galloway, found at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags.php?tag=themes . I’d love to see this made into a WP theme. I don’t know CSS or html well enough to restructure it. Any takers?
