I don’t want the new block Editing. I like the original version. All of a sudden it just appeared. How to switch back to classic?

Hi there, WPcom is retiring the Classic Editor in the MySite dashboard for the entire WPcom platform. You can read more about the change in these blog posts
    https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/05/18/say-hello-to-the-wordpress-block-editor/
    https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/

If you wish to use the Editor in the MySite dashboard, you can use the Classic Block, which emulates the previous Classic Editor, as described here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

Otherwise if you prefer not to use the Classic Block there, the original WP Classic Editor https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor is available via the WP Admin dashboard of your site at yoursite.wordpress.com./wp-admin/post-new.php That’s the same dashboard we used on WPcom before the MySite dashboard was introduced in 2015.

Here’s more information about the change at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-com-classic-editor-deprecation-faqs/

Post back here if you have any more questions about this.

So how do you add photo’s to the articles? There is no more Add Media? How do I find that?

And what’s the reason you decided to retire the Classic Editor? It was good. Why didn’t you just create another version dashboard option for writers if they want, instead of forcing your changes?

You know you say create your own website is not true. You are the one who is making the changes not me, so how is it my website?

I have enough things to think about like remembering my passwords, instead of trying to learn the new in’s and outs of my so called Website, because changes that no one really wanted. Ever consider all these changes is why people will not want to use now?

So why don’t they change Stop Lights? You know: Go when the light turns Black. Stop when the light turns Blue? You know Black and Blue?

Or change directions, when they say make a block at the end of the left, and go straight backwards until you see a barn red , then turn Park at the Right.

    you Wish it back. change

    ugh. : (

Excuse me but I think your so called New Block Editing Format is total BS. Trying to conform everyone to some High Tech Editor Employee trying to promote himself in getting a raise off the non consent of users at WordPress. I find it disgusting, and wish you would allow those who want to remain using the Classic Editor and Posting of Articles to use it. You don’t need to discontinue it.

The Classic Block is no solution at all. It’s unusable. You click somewhere in an empty spot and it disappears. Total BS this editor.

I think after 12 years, it had to come to an end. This is a serious game breaker for me. I question that I can use this messed up editor. It’s the most horrible experience I ever had. The usability is horrendous.

It’s sad. This is it finally… this might make me abandon my 12 years old blog.

    #3558724

Like what the actual **** is this ****? Even for basic tasks like adding a picture you need tons of clicks. God, what a miserable experience.

Hello again @fgemg – volunteers and staff in these community forums are here to help you troubleshoot bugs and resolve issues with your site, however, we do not tolerate abuse. Your forum posts are subject to our Best Practices & Community Standards https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/best-practices-community-standards/ Thanks.

So how do you add photo’s to the articles? There is no more Add Media? How do I find that?

Are you adding media in the Classic Block or in the Block editor directly or in the Classic Editor at WP Admin?

If in the Classic Block, in the top row of icons in the Classic Block, you’ll see an icon that looks like this

Clicking on that will open the Media Manager where you can select or upload a Media file. Any file you add there will be contained within the Classic Block.

If in the Block Editor directly, the quickest way to add an image is to hit Enter and then type /image which will bring up a number of possible image options. Have a look at this support guide for full details on using the Image block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/

I do know there is a bug with Firefox at the moment where adding an image in an Image Block may take a couple of tries. The developers are working to resolve this.

If you are creating content in your site’s WP Admin Classic Editor, this guide explains how to add images to your Post or Page https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/2/

@diaryofdennis if you have a specific question about working with your free WPcom site, please open your own forum thread at https://wordpress.com/help/contact so we can see how to help you, keeping in mind what I mentioned above. Thanks.

I don’t understand why long time users are getting so worked up when the post/page editors in the wp-admin dashboard continue to be available and are surely familiar to them as that is what they would have been using when they first created their sites.

I never used the post/page editors to write a post, or when I created my site. Sorry I am not abusing anyone. How else to express dissatisfaction? By saying I don’t like it, can be as irrelevant as saying I don’t like waiting at a red light. No one cares.

And also I have Firefox and maybe that’s the issue. I don’t know for sure. The problem I find is when I want to edit per html I make the edit and then it automatically switches back to the original format I wanted to change. So there is a problem with the html editing. And I can find no underline tab, on the top row icons. So what is the significance of the Block vs. the Post? Seems they are the same, but is made to look like a choice.

    Thanks for your information.

I never used the post/page editors to write a post

Are you using an App? Are you copy/pasting from elsewhere? Posting by email? Is your issue only when editing an existing post? I find it best not to click on the “Write” button or “My sites”. Have you tried https://djermano.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

Hello again, this gets long but I hope it answers your points:

    About not abusing anyone:

Trying to conform everyone to some High Tech Editor Employee trying to promote himself in getting a raise off the non consent of users at WordPress.

It’s not acceptable to lash out like this here. As it says in our Best Practices & Community Standards:

Be respectful: Be friendly, patient, and encouraging to all members of our community. Name-calling, harassment, and other abuse toward staff or the community will not be tolerated.

Thanks for keeping this in mind going forward.

    I find it disgusting

As these are technical support forums, it’s best to provide specific feedback and describe exactly what it is about working with the Block Editor you find disgusting. If you provide specific examples, we can try to help you overcome your disgust.

, and wish you would allow those who want to remain using the Classic Editor and Posting of Articles to use it. You don’t need to discontinue it.

Did you read the links I shared in my very first reply? https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/the-new-editing/#post-3557962 The Classic Editor in MySites is being retired in order that WPcom can concentrate on improving the Block Editor which is now the standard Editor for WP since 2018. If you don’t want to use it or the Classic Block, you have the option of using the original WP TinyMCE Editor at your site’s WP Admin dashboard https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-com-classic-editor-deprecation-faqs/#how-can-i-use-the-classic-editor (Sorry to be repeating myself.)

I never used the post/page editors to write a post, or when I created my site.

That’s curious. The full switch to the MySite Dashboard Editor happened about 2 and a half years after you created your account. https://wordpress.com/blog/2015/11/16/new-high-speed-editor/

And also I have Firefox and maybe that’s the issue. I don’t know for sure.

Are we talking about images again? If so, I answered you here https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/the-new-editing/#post-3559715 Have you tried using a different browser? What OS are you using?

The problem I find is when I want to edit per html I make the edit and then it automatically switches back to the original format I wanted to change.

Here it would be helpful to understand which Editor you are using when it happens, the Block Editor at MySite or the Classic Editor in WP Admin as this could be a bug. Give us details and if possible share a link to a post where this happens.

And I can find no underline tab, on the top row icons.

The Underline was removed from the WordPress core software a few years ago, but I believe you can still use it with keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+U)

So what is the significance of the Block vs. the Post? Seems they are the same, but is made to look like a choice.

At its simplest, a block holds a type of content, such as text or media, and blocks can be combined and arranged in the WordPress Editor to create rich content, which you then publish as a Post (or Page). Not that I’m big on interior design, but think of blocks as the furniture, fabrics, lighting, etc. that make up the total look/feel of your living room (post or page). In essence when using the Classic Editor with paragraphs and media you create and publish a Post, but using blocks gives you many more options, but you don’t have to use those additional options.

If you want to keep it simple, you can use the Block Editor to just write text and add images. The default block is the Paragraph block and you can add images when starting a new block by hitting Enter and typing /image which will bring up a whole array of image insertion options. It really doesn’t get much simpler than that.

Again, post back here if you have more questions about any of the above.

@themagicrobot All good questions and I cannot tell you the number of times I refreshed this page before I copied, pasted and posted my last reply and until then I did not see your reply from yesterday! Sigh.

I think it’s the wording part. Block sounds negative to me like you’re putting up road blocks, or preventing something or someone from posting. A better word would be window. I would call the word block an insult, and can see you think of it a different way, but is still incorrect in my opinion because blocks no one associates to write in a block, but that is what you infer. Am I correct?

And I also notice that Facebook is dumping its original format as well that they as well call Classic. Why you as well as Facebook call it Classic? And retiring is not a good reason. Classic worked great. I find it a pity you people change stuff without asking the users first. Your new editing posting is more trouble than the original format. Sorry.

So the underlining I click on the small keyboard then (ctl u) and I can underline?

The new editor just came and took over my page. It was a couple days ago, not 2 years ago.

When I used my WP sight I always logged in, then went to my site, and clicked the write tab, and just began writing. Everything was there. No block editor jargon. I had instant html or view, I could underline, add media, and if want to Edit, all I had to do it click the edit tab, and it was available.

Now I have to go to admin, post, create a new post, then the crazy block editor appears, have to click over to classic, which isn’t the same classic as I had before.
Anyway, hope I can manage this.

    (-/-)

Hello again, Just a reminder that I’m a volunteer moderator here, not an employee of WPcom.

I think of Block as in building blocks. I have a whole set of wood ones from when my kids were little and delighted to see them arrange and build things with them. So I guess our associations with the word Block are different. (And I think Bill and Co. co-opted the word Windows for something else. Heaven help us if WPcom started using that term as well!)

I admit that the various and numerous Editor labels are confusing. The “New Editor” is what WPcom introduced in 2015 at MySites. Check out the WPcom blog post I linked to earlier. The Block Editor is what you’ll find at MySites now.

So the underlining I click on the small keyboard then (ctl u) and I can underline?

Again, it would be good to know in which dashboard you are editing. Where do you see “the small keyboard”?

If you are using a Windows based PC, you can highlight the word you want to underline and then click CTRL + U to underline it.

As the deprecation FAQ admits, change is disruptive. If you are now using the Classic Editor at WP Admin, don’t click on the WRITE button in the Admin Bar because that will take you to the MySite Block Editor.

The quickest way to get to the WP Admin’s New Post is to do what @themagicrobot mentioned in his post above https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/the-new-editing/#post-3560327 Bookmark the link to your WP Admin new post in your browser’s bookmark toolbar. That is what we suggested to users who wanted to return to the original “Classic Editor” when WPcom introduced the MySite Editor.

Spend a little time getting to know the WP Admin Classic Editor toolbar if that is where you’ve chosen to create your posts. https://wordpress.com/support/visual-editor/ It’s very similar to what was available previously in MySite.

Cheers, it’s offline time for me.

Here’s another word for Block : “Chamber”

Because you don’t like the word Window, thinking the term is owned by Microsoft, but you have no disagreement in concern to the Word “Classic” the same word Facebook uses.

The small keyboard is found in the icon’s Chamber above area where you write the article.

And I don’t need the editing link by @themagicrobot. It’s easily found in my start up. Thanks.
