Ted Talk embed

  • Looks like Ted Talk no longer includes an ID number in its embed code. Am I missing something? Is there a newer way to embed Ted Talks into a wordpress site?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello @moreog,

Yes sometimes this can get alittle tricky but hopefully this guide points you in the right direction.

    Hi, @nelsonortiz17
The document shows an embed code with the WordPress shortcode option.
But that option doesn’t exist now.

  • I was following the same article as the link you sent. Unfortunately, Step 2 does not provide a Ted Talk ID, not a size selection as indicated by this WordPress article. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • I have added modlook tag into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help.
    Be patient while waiting. :)

  • Hi there,

You need to first click on the Share button and then click on the Embed button, as show in the following screenshot:

If this still doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

    Hi, @fstat
The instructions from the support page says:

    Embedding with a Shortcode

Visit TED.com and locate the talk you would like to embed in your blog.

    1. Go to any Talk page. Hit the red button that says </>
    2. Copy the WordPress shortcode from the overlay window and paste it to your post or page edit screen.
In this example, the shortcode is [ted id=1969]

Bonus: If you want your embed to have automatic subtitles, select them from the pulldown.

    3. Publish the post or page, and the video will be similar to the one below.

If I go to any Talk page, like this:

and click on the Share button and then click on the Embed button, the code is…

There is no WordPress shortcode or Id=xxxx there.

  • Sorry,
If I go to any Talk page, like this:
    Example

and click on the Share button and then click on the Embed button, the code is very different from the one on the support page.

There is no WordPress shortcode or Id=xxxx there.

  • Hi folks, I can confirm the URLs seem a bit different now. We do have easier embeds now though too. If you just paste the TED talk link does it work for you? If so we can update the documentation.

  • Hi, @supernovia
Do you mean that it is enough with just the link?

That is, in the example I put above, would it be enough to put the link?
    https://www.ted.com/talks/katharine_hayhoe_the_most_important_thing_you_can_do_to_fight_climate_change_talk_about_it

It seems that it works for me.

  • It looks like it may embed nicely in the Block editor but not in Classic. If I embed in Block and update in Classic, it uses the code from classic (and doesn’t work).

So in this case I’d recommend pasting the URL using the newer editor. We’ll try more situations to confirm before updating the docs.

  • It does look like the shortcode has been giving problems for a while now :)

But also, TED no longer offers a WordPress shortcode because they now support oEmbed, and oEmbed for TED videos have been part of WordPress Core for quite some time. So simply pasting the link on its own line in the Classic Editor, or inside the TED Embed block in the block editor, should correctly embed the video.

The support doc is due for an update, and it’s on our list for docs that need to be updated for the block editor.
