Over the past week and a half my follower count has gone from the 50 or so accumulated over 3 years to 130 with 70 or so over the last week and a half.
Given the number of views my blog gets this is a very high percentage of visitors clicking follow.
Most have no blogs. Many are not in English.
    What is going on?
The most recent was a gemmamillenson whose Gravatar is a picture of Gemma Atkinson – clearly less than legitimate.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, they are spam followers, we all get them.

Unfortunately you can not stop people from following your blog.
You can blacklist their comments. (You can’t stop them from liking).

If you think any of your follower is not leg and following you just for spamming you can report his blog to be spam.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/report-blogs/
Staff will review your report and will take necessary actions.

I kinda figured they were spam. The sudden surge seemed a bit peculiar. What do they hope to gain?

What do they hope to gain?

They are just attention seekers who follow blogs especially the newbies intend to get attention. You just need to ignore them and their aim will just lost.
