Subscribe to comments email confirmation
-
Why do all my friends now get an email when they subscribe to comments? This is very annoying and will soon cut down on the people using this feature. I understand why its there but at the same time there are tons of us who only have private blogs for friends and family and should have an option to turn it on or off. I have never had a prank or spam pulled on anybody who reads my blogs. If anything make it a one time confirmation “do you want to subscribe to comments on this blog from now on?” or something. PLZ fix this so we dont lose subscribers!

Subscribing to comments requires the commenter to check a box below the comment area. There will be a check box followed by a “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.”
In the emails, if they want to, there is an “unsubscribe” link where they can unsubscribe to comments if they wish.
If you want to turn the subscribe to comments feature off, go to settings > discussion and click the box near the bottom before “Don’t allow visitors to subscribe to the comments made on this blog.” It is right above the Avatar’s section. Make sure and click “save changes” when done to commit your change.

I know how to turn it on and off thats not what Im saying.
When the subscriber subscribes to a comment, they get an email –————————————————————————————————————-
Howdy!
This is an automated message sent by the WordPress.com subscription service.
You requested to subscribe to ‘******’ on ”. If you confirm this subscription you will receive further emails when anyone comments on this page.
To confirm this subscription click this link:
*************
Read the original blog post:*************
If you did not request this action please disregard this message. You can block further messages by clicking on ‘Manage your subscriptions’ and changing your settings.
————————————————————————————————————-I dont want them to have to confirm that they want to do this. Checking the box should be good enough.

I doubt seriously wordpress will take out the confirmation email It’s in their to stop abuse.
It’s too easy for people to use someone else’s email address and then either out of spite, or as a joke, flood someone’s email inbox by going around and subscribing others to random email updates they did not want.
-
Yeah but theres a lot of people out there who dont have public blogs. I would like to see an option that allows the user to turn that on or off because only a hand full of family read my blog and I doubt any of them will be playing pranks on each other. It should be an option.

I wish this was my “problem” to begin with and not yours. I had for a very long time wanted the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.” feature and eventually WP team rolled it out. I was ecstatic for a while when I was using Misty Look and then The Journalist theme. However few months back after switching to P2 Theme, that feature vanished and became privileged to some countries who could see the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.” option on their browser be it IE or Firefox.
This occurrence is very weird, I wrote to support they say they were able to see the checkbox (even sent me a screen capture to confirm) and that was the last I heard from them even after I’ve made several attempts to escalate with evidence/feedback from users in other countries that the Checkbox does not appear on their browsers. Very very weird.

I too HATE the follow-up email. It is new. There should be no reason for it to stop “abuse” as I’ve been using and reading WordPress blogs for a long time, and I’ve never had the follow-up emails until this week.I really hope they made a way to override it on accounts at least…
-
Well, for one thing, NOT having it is illegal in Canada. We’ve had some issues with internet stalkers signing people up to newsletters, etc, they didn’t want, and now you have to have the confirmation email.
-
Oh, also, if your friends are tired of getting these emails they can avoid them by simply checking your blog regularly. There’s an incentive for bloggers!
-
What I can’t understand is how I get the same message, but telling me I’ve subscribed to my own post’s comments. Anyone any ideas?
-
Hmm – seems it’s a copy of the email sent to the subscriber. Not too obvious, though.
As with rebeccareid, it’s new and apparently pointless. Confirming that the subscriber actually has subscribed is fine, I don’t have a problem with that, but this isn’t the same thing at all.

Plus when you click on the link in the email it takes you to a wordpress log in screen.
My readers HATE this and have stopped using the subscribe feature. I get less comments now because people dont have time or always remember to check back. Its a terrible change to something that was so great.
I had one reader tell me to just take it off my blog and Im considering that. Its a shame. -
Yes, I’ve just begun getting this on some friends’ blogs in the last week or two. Blogs I’ve been reading forever, so I’m quite sure it’s a new and really awful barrier. It’s quite annoying, and clicking confirm alone isn’t enough, you have to log in, and what if I’m reading their blog but I’m not in front of my email at that moment?
And I don’t even know what happens to folks who don’t have a login as I do.
It was great when subscribe to comments finally became possible for friends with wp dot com blogs, because it encourages conversation. This will just discourage the conversation for folks not willing to jump through the hoops or confused by it.
I was hoping to read here that it was a setting that I could help them find and turn off but it sounds like this is actually considered a “feature”!
Looks like the only answer is for them to finally make the jump off wp dot com.

As a person participating frequently in some-one else’s blog, and which amounts to a well patronised forum for discussion, I reported this email I get to the guy who runs it, because I believe it will deter people from participating. It is perplexing …not atall clear whether it means you have to have a password to participate…could even mean subscription/money…and is a general hassle. I have learned to ignore it…but I shouldn’t have to. Other people will be put off by the email, think life is too short, and give up.
Hope they do something about it! Quickly!
