Stats Classics: How to set?

WordPress knew from the start the new stats were junk – the Post they sent out had the comments disabled, only the “like” button for the few suck-ups was enabled
The old stats worked fine on a mobile device, I visit the old stats on my smart phone everyday, the page is responsive and switches to single column automatically – not a problem – but the new stats were a grand waste of time and money – while real problems like https support for mapped domains are ignored. And the new stats did not even have the numbers working correctly – I don’t even bother to look at the new junk stats – that I need to set a bookmark in my browser to get to some good stats is really annoying, not that anyone at WordPress really cares

auxclass, I agree with you that WP doesn’t care about us bloggers.

I’m also a fan of the previous stats page. I’ve tried this new one but don’t find it nearly as informative. My three main reasons:
1. It doesn’t have a link to the summary tables, i.e., https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?view=table.
2. Total lifetime visits to the blog aren’t shown.
3. As stated many times here, I’d rather see a month’s worth of data in the main graph.
Regarding #1, are the summary tables being eliminated as well? They are really useful.

Am appalled that WP changes have reached such a state that Timethief has fallen out of love with WP, but as a blogger of five years here I agree with her that the blanket changes being imposed have made the whole blogging experience here a nuisance rather than a painless activity.
I’ve complained elsewhere on the stats issue. I hate the superficial new approach, having always relied on the archived figures to gauge progress since joining WP. They’re not subtle but they do have a definite role as benchmarks, as do search terms that drive traffic in. And stats need to be comparable at a glance.
I too have thought about leaving WP recently but the trouble is finding a better host. I maintain a couple of historic blogs at Blogger and every inch of the posting process feels like walking with dinosaurs. Its edit interface is a monstrous joke – actually, more like a torture chamber.
Perhaps it would pay WP to divide its userbase into two factions – desktop bloggers, separate from the witless Twitter-era mobile dweebs – and leave our classic interface as it was, namely, usable.

I agree with the last comment. A mobile version and a desktop version is what Apple does and it works. It recognises that the needs are different.
But, as you say, the new stats are not even elegant on mobile devices. And nobody is listening.

The thread about the “massive changes to WP” has now been closed after staff answered some of the comments but didn’t give any of us the time to respond.

This is not the first time this has happened. It happened with the complaints about the Beep Beep Boop, too-blue editor thread.
She did mention something that I’d like to know more clearly.
“At least one (possibly both) of the older stats pages should be retired at some point.”
Earlier designsimply stated that the classic Stats page (the one with our own color scheme) was not going to be discontinued. Now she says that it may. Which is it?

Closing the “Massive Changes” thread is a disgraceful breach of the forums code of conduct. It was recently changed, but was (verbatim):-

@timethief, change will continue to go forward. WordPress.com is in a transition that will take some time to complete, so I think if you want to stay then working together and providing constructive, specific feedback is the most helpful thing someone can do—changes based on feedback like that will happen over time, and some updates to the stats pages are already in the works. For someone who would like to have complete control over when and how often things are updated, then a WordPress.org setup may be a really good choice for them . Both WordPress.com and WordPress.org are excellent choices, and there are tradeoffs for each. With WordPress.com, as you know, updates are always happening and will continue to happen. With WordPress.org, you can choose when/how your site gets updated but the tradeoff is that you must manage the software yourself entirely.

It now appears that my blog no longer fills the entire webspace. It’s as if it is embedded in a field of beige.
rhythloday, what you posted about a post being in a field of beige sounds odd to me. I can’t quite tell what you’re referring to without an example though. If you’d like to provide a link, I’d be happy to take a closer look and see if I can help explain or possibly get a fix in place if there is a bug in a theme or something like that.

yoursumbuddy, thank you for your feedback. Lifetime stats should be visible on the table summary view in the future, but not on the first main stats page. The summary tables are going to be added back based on yours and other feedback. Same goes for the graph, it’s going to be updated to show 30 days in the graph by default.

dandelionsalad, to be completely honest, I am not 100% sure on this point which is probably why you’re feeling I’m going back and forth with answers. I’m so sorry about that! What I can say right now is I am uncertain, and that is because no solid, final decision has been made yet. So, if I misspoke before, I apologize and it might have been my mistake to misinterpret what I posted before. To clarify, I cannot say with 100% certainty what will happen to the older stats page but here is what I think: two versions of the stats pages will stay in the short term (one new and one old), and the hope for the future will be to improve the newest page to the point where it can replace the others. However, I don’t think any of this will happen any time soon, so focusing on constructive feedback around improving the new stats page as we have been doing is the best way forward right now. Updates for the newest stats page are already being worked on and feedback is being taken into account. I know you’re concerned about the fate of the older style pages, and I just wanted to clarify that I don’t have a 100% solid answer for you on this exact topic and I apologize.

It has been very confusing. There are multiple threads just on the New Stats page, as well as multiple threads on the New dashboard and New Editor pages with different members of staff answering questions.
To be more clear, there are 2 versions of the “old” Stats page which are different. Are both of these older versions going to be eliminated?
Does that also mean that the “classic” dashboard will be eliminated?
You mentioned that in the short term one old and one new Stats page will remain. Which one of the old versions are you referring?
And why close down the thread that so many of us were following after you made comments but not allowing any questions or follow-up?

I am sorry but I don’t have a solid answer for this. No final decision has been made that I know of. I know that we do want to at least remove one of the older versions, but I am not sure when.

The thread was starting to get off topic in some cases and was also getting very long and hard to follow. Also, I feel I was able to get a good idea of the feedback and I have now collected, summarized, and reported the main ideas from there—new issues will be easier to track in new threads and old issues brought up again are just part of the feedback I’ve already collected. Many of the later posts there were mostly the same users from the beginning of the thread or duplicate feedback or feedback about things that are already planned updates based on the feedback.

Stop getting endless feedback piecemeal! It’s very boring for everybody. Do the job right, in one go, and get a BIT of feedback.

Nothing else than a knockout argument, sorry. You clearly don’t get the point of the users here.
Six years ago I came here due to the fact that the usability of the core was exactly the same as with my self hosted previous projects but with one big difference. Even with tons of daily views I wouldn’t get in trouble with the host as wp.com allows me to get traffic no matter how high, thus resulting in the thought “Who cares, a post could become viral and I don’t get into trouble”.
Can you imagine what that kind of luxury would cost someone who wants to host his own site? I can tell you out of experience that you don’t even need a viral post to get into trouble with a cheap shared host service because you eat too much bandwidth. On the other hand you could rent dedicated, on a cloud and what not but that cost a lot.
The point I want to make is that you don’t need to explain the users here why they are here or not. I for myself know why I came here. And as said, the core was the same on org and com. Due to my older projects I knew what I could do if I install wp on my own anywhere but did I really need all that stuff? Nope, this is why I am here.
Your knockout argument is misplaced. Many people came here because of a great service with the ability to upgrade and because they needed just the blogging core. What your team did now is messing with the core, you heard it often enough but it must be mentioned, your team downgraded your service.
So, please stop telling people what they could do. I am sure that I am not the only one who knows why I came here.
Apart from that, believe me, many of us considering already the solution to move, but you and me, we both should know what that means. It’s trouble.
Your argument sounds like “Na, na, na, na… you can move, we don’t need you here”. It’s offending, sorry.
Do you get my point? There would be absolutely no reason to leave this place if you wouldn’t have messed with the core of wp.com.
So much about tradeoffs. It’s not that easy as you think. Many of us here feel offended like “first we get you” and “now we don’t need you anymore because our next target groups are some mobile tumblr kids”.

@davidderrick, I’m collecting and working to clarify the feedback posted here. I will continue to do my best to help. I think being present and part of the conversation here is a good thing to do.
