  I am new to blogging. Can I first start with a free wordpress blog to get my feet wet and then, If I’m happy with it move to a paid hosted version ?

  Hi there, the free plan allows you create a blog hosted on WordPress servers with an address ending with .wordpress.com. Once you get comfortable, you can upgrade it at any time to a paid version including a custom domain or graphic layout.
