Signature Block(s) for Posts

  • In my blog posts for my Metablog, I have a standard “signature block” addendum, that looks like this:

    <img class="aligncenter" src="http://dailypost.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/postaday-badge-small.png" alt="" width="154" height="30" />

    Jim Adcock is a SharePoint Administrator, and blogs about SharePoint at his main blog, Working It Out. He is also Vice President of Launch Pad Job Club, an organization in Austin, Texas, whose mission is help people who have lost their jobs to get the skills they need to land their next job, and to help them cope with the interim between jobs. Consequently, Jim also blogs about career management. He also serves as Secretary on the Austin Software Process Improvement Network Board of Directors. He also wants to know why everyone keeps asking him about sleep…

    I use this to generate interest in my other projects and direct readers to them.

    Instead of copying and pasting this to each post as I do it, it would be neat to be able to add signature blocks in a way similar to an classic-asp include file. Even better would be to allow multiple possible signatures, say, for instance, if you wanted to have a different block depending on something like the post’s topic.

    Signature blocks could be stored separate from the post content – like is done with Media, Catgegories and Tags – and attached to the posts. Then, if something changes – like say I wanted to announce a speaking engagement in my signature – I could change the content once, and it would be propagated to all of the posts that the signature was attached to.

    The section to include or not include a signature (and which signature to add) could be added to the Add/Edit Post page where the Publish, Categories, and Post Tags boxes are.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I do not wish to have such a signature block appear at the end of my posts. I prefer to display such information on an About page. Therefore if Staff do introduce such a signature block on posts I sincerely hope it’s optional.

  • well, yes, the idea would be for it to be optional, and to be able to pick from multiple signature blocks, hopefully.

    There would also be a place in this for theme developers to have special styles for the sig blocks for their theme.

  • FWIW, Twenty Ten, Pilcrow and Elegant Grunge display the profile with each post, according to this article:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/category/authors/
    Sort of like a signature eh?

  • You put ALL of that in your posts every time? Holy spam-looking content alert, Batman!

    Frankly, sigfiles on blogs to which there is only ONE contributor look desperate. They’re used, for instance, by every MLM marketer I know.

    Thanks for the quick list of themes I’ll never consider using now. lol ;)

    @raincoaster
    You have such a unique way with words. LOL :D

  • Well, *that* block is for posts on my intended-to-be-a-group-blog blog (still haven’t gotten others to step up as yet, but I want to get a little further along before I make a big push for that aspect), which I consider to be secondary to my main blog.

    On my main blog, have two main content types, for (mostly) different audiences. Since adding a (much more brief) footer with a link to “more of the same” content, my hits have increased form readers reading more than they were originally searching/surfing for. But each content type has it’s own slug.

    I just want to be able to manage the slugs more efficiently.

    airodyssey – thx for the heads-up on the themes, i’ll check into them.

  • @timethief: Well you could… just make sure your “About me” section of your personal profile (Gravatar) is empty :-)

    @dlairman: Glad I could help :-)

  • I like seeing things like this in either Alerts at the top of Author pages OR in sidebar widgets. It’s just that seeing it repeatedly would be very a) retro b) tedious. After all, there IS value in simply assuming that everyone knows who you are, but a shorter version would be helpful unless it’s a blog you’re only posting to once a month, where the majority of readers would not have encountered you before.

  • The blog my big block is for is new, and I haven’t yet developed a steady audience for.

    My main blog does have a fairly stable audience, but it also gets a large proporting of its traffic from search engines, and I have a lot to offer those searchers beyond their immediate search results.

  • THat’s wise. I have to admit, my sidebar links aren’t really producing for me.
