SE Ranking goes down after registering second domain
-
Hi,
since I registered a cool domain name with my wordpress blog, my search engine rankings goes down. I think because of duplicated content. My questions:
What can I do, so that search engines do not believe I have duplicated content here? Is there any way to include the canonical tag somehow into my blog posts?
I would really appreciate you help!
Many thanks in advance!
Robin

If you just bought a custom domain name and mapped it to your WordPress.COM site here – the search drop is normal as search engines get used to the new name and re-index your site – not much you can do but keep on posting – after a while the search engines will index you to your new name and the original WordPress.cOM name will fade – – sorry don’t know how long – but search engines can take a few months to clear their caches of deleted stuff – so I would assume that it will take a few months – – but in the end is should be fine

Many thanks for the fast reply.
Do you think that this will happen, also if there are both domains active? So I have robinsedlaczek.wordpress.com and robinsedlaczek.com enabled. But I cannot disable or delete the first one that comes with the basic subscription.

One option you have is to set for .wordpress.com site to private so that search engines are discouraged from visiting it:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
That way they will know to focus on your robinsedlaczek.com site.

Primary Blog is Set
robinsedlaczek.com is set as the primary domain for robinsedlaczek.wordpress.com and will appear in the address bar when you visit the site.
Since you have domain mapping – you don’t need to do anything – search engines are being 301 redirected (moved permanently) to robinsedlaczek.com – so the old addresses still work (good) – visitor end up on the new name (good) – search engines are in the process of changing the indexing to robinsedlaczek.com (good) – – the old domain robinsedlaczek.wordpress.com – is only sort of active – in that nobody can get to it anymore because of domain mapping – search engines can’t get to the old site – they go to the new site
just keep on blogging – don’t change any settings

you be welcome & good luck
the shuffle step in the indexing is why we recommend that if you are going to get a custom domain name – you do it early rather than late to start training the search engines early and the right way – sort of like kids & pets I guess
