Reusable Blocks – Question and Documentation

  • Howdy,

Does deleting a Reusable block in the Manage Reusable Blocks dashboard /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=wp_block also delete the block from the posts/pages where it’s been inserted? There’s no mention of this in the support doc at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/reusable-block/

Also, at the bottom of that same support doc there’s a reference to Export a Reusable Block, which, when attempted in that same wp admin dashboard, does not appear to export anything. I’ve tried in both FF 103.0.2 (64-bit) and in MS Edge 104.0.1293.47 (Official build) (64-bit) on Win10Pro

I certainly would prefer to export a reusable block before deleting it!

I also see that @staff-blorbo noted in this forum thread from January 2020 that the export function didn’t work in his tests either.

    Thanks

  • Hi Jen,

Does deleting a Reusable block in the Manage Reusable Blocks dashboard /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=wp_block also delete the block from the posts/pages where it’s been inserted? Deleting a Resuable block removes it from all the posts it has inserted. We need to update that documentation. Thanks for catching that Jen!

Also, at the bottom of that same support doc there’s a reference to Export a Reusable Block, which, when attempted in that same wp admin dashboard, does not appear to export anything.

Yes, this issue has been reported, and our devs are working on a fix. In the meantime, you can export the block by copying its code from the Code Editor.

  • OK-so I did this a little differently and am posting what I did here in case someone else would find this info useful.

First I found the ID number of the Reusable Block by editing the block and looking at the info in the browser address bar. Pretty much the same as https://wordpress.com/support/pages/#how-to-find-the-page-id

Then I went to my Posts Dashboard and searched for that ID number and deleted the block from each post where it appeared. Thankfully only a few.

Then I went back to the Reusable Block dashboard and reverted the Reusable block to a Draft. That way I didn’t have to delete it in case I want to use it again in the future and, yes, I understand I would have to reinsert it in posts manually at that point.

    Cheers!
