Removing a Domain

  • When starting at WorkPress I began and registered a domain of:
    joelstockbrilliantmanagementleadership.wordpress.com
(At least I think that is the correct spelling.) That was a mistake.
I obtained a new domain and I’m working with it now in WordPress. It is:
    brilliant-management-leadership.com
Would you help by removing the first url whch was the mistake – and place the second one as my primary domain.
Also, I have seen the the first url has a notation that it never expires but the second one does. Could you help me understand that?
Thanks so much for your kind patience and help.

  • Hi Joel! Your primary domain is already set to brilliant-management-leadership.com!

    https://wordpress.com/my-domains

There’s no way to completely remove the WordPress.com address. But with your custom domain, none of your readers will ever see it.

Do you have a second site:

    https://joelstockbrilliantworkforceleadership.wordpress.com/

This site is not associated with the domain brilliant-management-leadership.com.

Please let me know if this is set up incorrectly and I can help you fix it up. :)

  • Wow – thanks so much for your quick response and help.
The first domain I mentioned has a notation that it’s url “Never expires.” Yet, the newer and changed one shows that it is valid for only one year. Could you help me understand the difference. Perhaps it is a mistake at my entering the registration information (dang.)
But … I do appreciate your patience and help.

  • Sure! Here at WordPress.com every site has what we call a “WordPress.com address”. Yours is:

    brilliantmanagementleadership.wordpress.com

This gives us an easy way to identify your site no matter what other upgrades or domains you have. Once you have a custom domain (brilliant-management-leadership.com) your readers will never see this WordPress.com address. They’ll just see the awesome domain you chose. :)

Now, domains need to be renewed on a yearly basis. This is a standard across the internet. So you’ll need to continue to renew your custom domain.

If you ever decide to remove your custom domain, or change it, all of your content will still be there because its associated with your WordPress.com address. This makes it really easy to keep your content while making changes.

I hope that clarifies things for you. Let me know if you have more questions! :)

  • Dang. You are so helpful. I owe you an ice cream. I’m getting used to working with WordPress. At first I felt a bit irritated. Now I feel more comfortable knowing more navigation – But, thank you again.

  • I’m glad you’re getting used to WordPress.com! I’m a little biased, but I think its a pretty great tool. ;)

Just let me know if there’s anything else I can help with!
