I just signed up with WordPress and paid the $100 upgrade. I have some computer knowledge but am really struggling with WordPress. How exactly do I add meta tags to my blog so the search engines can find me. I do not understand the WordPress instructions. I also downooaded a zipped file meta tag manager but see no way to install it nor find a plug in tab on my dashbaord as well. Is there also a way to put links on the side of your home page. this has been a struggle. I woul dappreciate the help

The blog I need help with is weinsure2.com.

    Hello there,
    1. You cannot access metadata files and add anything on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.
    2. You verify your blog ownership of a free hosted WordPress.com blog with the major search engines using this process and no other process > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
    3. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot upload anything into them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/

    4. Please read this > WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

We cannot add meta tags at wordpress.COM, and really there is no need since wordpress.com sites have far more search engine exposure than any other platform and will our perform identical self-hosted sites that people have spent hundreds of hours optimizing for the search engines. It simply isn’t needed here.

You can verify your site with the major search engines by following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/ .

One other thing: The only thing search engines will even think about paying any attention to anymore is the meta description, and in my experience, even with a very carefully crafted meta description, the search engines will only use it about 40% of the time.

And as far as meta keywords/tags go, no search engine even looks at them anymore due to serious abuse.

Is there also a way to put links on the side of your home page.

create a BlogRoll in your dashboard Links section > http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/add-a-blogroll-link/
display it in your sidebar by installing a Links widget > http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/#links-widget

On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page. The searcbox there provides results from both the documentation and forum threads.

I am doing fine. I’m working too, sort of. I’m trying to redesign a page on a client’s website that has to contain a whole lot of links to portfolio items and she understandably doesn’t like just a long list, and didn’t like it when we had them as images either.

Sticky wicket as the British would say.

Thanks for all the answers and help guys. I’m also asking what I got with the $99 upgrade I paid. I supposed $12 let me use weinsure2.com instead of weinsure2.com.wordpress.com That was $12 I believe. But what did the rest of the $99 upgrade get me that I wouldn’t have got just paying $12?
