Problem with carriage returns in HTML
-
Hi there,
I’m having to use the HTML editor because the visual editor does not recognize my formatting when I paste in text. I have exported my document into HTML, and my browser can read it and it looks fine; when I paste the contents of the HTML file into the HTML editor box and click preview, the desired text is shown with the correct formatting, except with random carriage returns all over the place. Can you help?
Thanks,
Oliver

If you want to use an offline editor, any one of these are recommended:

Thanks, do you have any idea why there is a disparity between what my browser and what WP do with the HTML file?

In spite of converting your OpenOffice document to HTML, word processing programs add extra code. This is why they’re less than ideal as an offline editor.
There is a special button in the Visual Editor that will take your document and clean out the extraneous code (Paste from Word), but I seem to recall that, at one point, it wasn’t doing it’s job very well.
Perhaps this Support Doc will explain better:

If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here so you know how to do this correctly in the future. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
It’s also wise to enable this setting > Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.” Then open your latest post in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.”
