I think what you’re looking for is this:

(provided by knashermac2009).
However, I’m almost certain the post has been edited since knashermac2009 pointed it out. -
Check that: I was looking at the wrong post. It should have been this one:

If users stop using their service, WordPress will notice.
As I mentioned on another thread, it seems like WP is trying to converge/compete with Tumblr’s style and evolve into a more “user-friendly” approach.
The problem is that WordPress is designed for writing, whereas Tumblr is designed for sharing media. So WP needs functionality that suits writers and not the “pretty shiny moving objects” style favored by Tumblr.
That said, Tumblr is becoming more capable of traditional-style blogging as it refines its overall interface design. If WordPress insists on acting like an amateur version of Tumblr, then give Tumblr a try and save yourself months of aggravation arguing against WP when they clearly aren’t particularly concerned about the “Happiness” of their users. We have options elsewhere (i.e. Tumblr), so be fearless and see if you can be prepared to phase WordPress out completely if they continue their tone-deaf mentality when it comes to breaking features in the name of “progress” that were never broken in the first place.

yes, but how do you preserve much less transfer your personal archive? i would love to leave these corporate creeps but not at a cost to work done.
-
@thebrokenelbow “how do you preserve much less transfer your personal archive….”
I don’t know. You can export your WP data to an XML file, but I’m not sure if Tumblr allows you to import.
Does anyone have light to shed on this question?
I’ll have a look a bit later and hopefully report back with good news.

Suddenly the menus are on the left when I go to edit an old post. WTF?! Are these constant changes just for the sake of making changes. Ah, yes, I get in my car and the steering wheel is today on the right side. This is good. It shows they are doing somthing. Better get used to it. In a couple months it will be in the back seat and the passengers will sit up front.

@ tpenguinltg,
I think what you’re looking for is this:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/when-editing-an-old-post-how-do-i-switch-to-the-classic-editor?replies=5#post-2313016Yes, thank you, that was the thread I was referring to. I’m not sure whether I didn’t read far enough into the thread the first time I visited it or whether it was added to after I saw it, but Hap Engr thatrobyn eventually reversed what she was saying. Initially she acknowledged on (March 16, 10:47 AM PDT) that the link to the classic editor, referred to as a “button,” would be restored:
…team of developers is at work making sure that button is available again…
And then a couple of hours later confirmed knashermac2009’s deduction, “Glad to hear that the removal of the option was a mistake,” by saying
Yes! It’s on our radar, and is something that will be amended! Thank you so much for your note. Hopefully, we’ll have a resolution for you soon.
The next post, two days later, contains the unexplained retraction:
However, a link to the Classic Editor will not return to the New Editor.

Sadly, for me, moving to another platform is not an option. I have too many users who are “used” to WP (however, some have not experienced BBB yet) and besides my blog is far too big to be exported. I also have around 20000 pictures, and these cannot be exported.
Over the 6 years I have been using WP I only visit the forum when I discover some bug or other. Some have been very obscure – like the time they decided to store comments as cookies (which led eventually to connection resets). I often used to work out precisely what was causing the fault even when those with access to the code coul not. My contributions have not amounted to much, I know.
Well, those days are over. I shall continue to use WP, but I’m blowed if I’m going to help WP in any way.
For what they have done – especially to timethief – I only have the utter contempt.
-
I have reluctantly got used to the fact that they continually change things for no good reason but what I resent is when they insist on telling me that they have improved it when clearly they haven’t.
The default editor is appalling in set out and design. If blogging is about writing then why would anyone put the text box right at the bottom of the screen. The whole thing defies any sort of design logic.
No point complaining of course because WP doesn’t listen or care! -
I need easy access to the classic posting option. Today I’ve had to bookmark it after hunting around for about one hour.
-
Classic posting is best reached by using the ‘Add New’ button in All Posts. And likewise for new Pages.
-
there is only one way to make these corporate types listen to their customers and that is publicity. i am a professional journalist and if someone is willing to write up a short history of this dispute i will happily put it into shape for publication somewhere, e.g wired magazine. we could also do a mass posting of the same piece on our respective blogs. get this dispute some publicity and then watch wordpress move. in the meantime we also need to know who we are dealing with. who is wordpress? who owns it? where is it based? who are these people screwing around with the site?

If it’s $$ that counts …. I would say more subscribers would mean more money. And more choice produces more business. Right now I wouldn’t consider upgrading … and I have five busy blogs.
More subscribers is more money, yes. But it’s a net increase in subscribers they are interested in.. the new ones coming minus the old ones going. So long as they bring in significantly more than they lose, then they will be happy. That’s just the way of business.
More choice does not produce more business. A product that appeals to the masses produces more business. WP do not seem to feel the Classic is the way forward in terms of mass appeal.
More choice produces more overheads.
I believe WP think the New Ed appeals to the masses and so that is why they are pushing it. I believe, they think it looks jazzier, sexier and altogether more ‘now’.
We don’t like it. But they don’t care.

On reflection, I’m surprised WP are bothering to keep this forum going. What’s the point?

I was involved in another WP issue …. the one involving the new Stats page … which originally was an unworkable mess requiring an endless scrolling as each item was posted in a long narrow column. It was a total disaster. But we kept at it and kept offering suggestions. And changes were made.
I do feel that WP developers check these forums because as one poster mentioned, we are actually part of the “testing” … a free part to be sure, but nevertheless one which they DO use. The Stats page eventually was fixed to include two columns rather than one, which reduced the scrolling by half. The horrible stats columns eventually included both views and visitors, an important distinction for blogs such as mine. Eventually they included a smaller map which again reduced the scrolling. They did indeed listen to suggestions.
The stats page has improved. It is still ugly and cramped with unnecessary information and a totally incomprehensible left hand menu which has no place at all in the format. But better than the original one.
I feel if we offer concrete complaints and suggestions for improvement, WP developers will indeed give us an ear. But “threats to leave” are like flicking a grain of sand off the beach. Utterly meaningless. Swearing and name-calling likewise. Our only chance is that commonsense will eventually prove so overwhelming that whatever differences are being thrashed out by the developers will be evened out with simple commonsense.
My argument is a simple one. There is no reason that I can see … or certainly none has been given … why choices cannot be given. Both for the stats page and the publishing format. No concrete reason for this intransigence has been offered. And there should be a good and cogent reason for this draconian move.
-
You make a very good point about live testing but my question is how can the changes they make be so bad and so full of errors? It is just plain sloppy!
-
Successful businesses usually listen to their customers/users. WordPress clearly considers this to be an unnecessary inconvenience!
