Please Delete Account Fully

  • Dear WordPress,
Please delete my account, under the data protection act in my country you are required by law (UK) to delete my information once I/you no longer need it ( which is the case now, as wish not to use your site and only signed up to see if I did, which I don’t).

This is insane that you do not provide this option, as an automated feature (and don’t even have a basic contact form for none paying users) especially when it’s required to be deleted to adhere to the data protection act.
If this can be done as soon as possible that would be great.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You cannot delete your WordPress.com username account. This is for security reasons so others cannot claim your username and impersonate you. http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

The only information you had to provide were a username and email address. You can disable all email notifications from your account settings:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-notifications/

If you change that email to a throwaway address there will be no way your account could ever be linked to you. Any other details that you added yourself, you also have the power to delete yourself. See timethief’s instructions in this post on how to do that: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/06/02/deleting-accounts-blogs-and-content/

  • How is that an excuse? why would I care about someone using the same username as me if I have deleted my old one.

So even though I don’t give a hoot about people using a wordpress username that I have no interest in having (as never plan on using wordpress ever), and never plan to blog using this system. They still thinks it’s ok to keep your details (not matter how few details there are), with just this poor excuse ? Sadly that isn’t enough in my country If I no longer need/ or the company no longer needs (which they don’t) my details are required by law to deleted (well has to be marks for deletion anyway).

Making a throwaway email isn’t acceptable either, an account is required to be deleted once the information/account is no longer required (and should be put on a marked for deletion in the DB).

Don’t really want to have to take this further, but It does seem insane a company is being allowed to do this, just shows how unprofessional they are I guess.

  • This is the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up for the account. WordPress.com is an American company and is not bound by UK laws. This is also clearly stated in the Terms of Service.

I’m tagging this for staff to follow up, as there’s no other advice I can give you.

  • Yea thanks for that, but quite frankly just makes me think very poorly of WordPress. Why do they think that is acceptable (who cares if it’s in the TOS who the hell reads that anyway)?

Wouldn’t it just be easier for them to actually just delete these accounts? Instead of acting like a douche and saying they won’t do it due to TOS or other stupid reasons. It’s not even hard in a technical term any database engineers should easily be able to create a mark for deletion table. Instead they have to instead reply over and over again to ppl request their account being deleted, not very good business sense.

  • Hi there,

Here are a few suggestions if you’d like to scrub your account of personal information:

    1) Empty and delete your sites:

First of all, be sure to empty your sites of all content.

Next, delete the site permanently. Please be aware that this is irreversible, and the site’s WordPress.com address won’t be available to use again in the future.

    2) If you are trying to unsubscribe from emails sent to you from WordPress.com, go to your account’s notifications settings and check the option to “Block Emails.”

    3) You can also go to your My Profile and Account settings to remove all data except the account username and an email address. You can create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address. This will only leave the username behind.

    4) To ensure the account is locked up tightly, visit this site, generate a password of 15-20 characters, and change the account password to it:

    http://www.thebitmill.com/tools/password.html

    5) You can remove all of your Gravatar profile information through the “Edit My Profile” page. To hide your Gravatar profile completely, visit your profile page and click the “Hide My Profile” link.

If you have a minute, it would be very helpful to us to hear why you to want to leave so we can try to improve our service in the future.

  • No I didn’t ask for how to scrub data from my account, I asked for the account to be deleted as never plan on using your site again.

So in other words you won’t do anything, and are happy to have data of people who have expressly requested you remove it.

The main reason is simply you have no respect for privacy, why do you think it is acceptable to not allow users to delete their account when they have expressly requested it ? (Who cares if someone uses that name after I have left, once I have deleted my account I have no interest in what happens to it after that point, (and I bet that goes for anyone wanting you to delete their accounts too)).

The options you give aren’t solution at all, I want the account deleted simple, It’s one of the easiest thing you can do for people to keep leaving customers happy (as they might come back, I won’t especially now).

I have no interest in using your site in any way shape or form, so why do you think you should be allowed to keep an account of someone who expressly requested you remove it?

Wouldn’t it just be better to provide people the option to delete the whole account completely (instead of hiding behind a stupid TOS, and considering it should take 5 minutes for a DB engineer to implement this sort of select statement, it’s quite frankly laughable that you don’t provide this option) instead of having to go through these stupid amount of hoops?

  • Could WordPress.com PLEASE clean up their URLs already?

I’m trying (again) to start a blog/website/online business, and looking for a URL. I’m trying all different variations of my name as username, and they are all taken…but empty sites sitting around from 2004-2006. There are no posts. There is no activity. For all I know, I can’t even email these people because they are dead or in the Witness Protection Program.

This is ridiculous. Is there any help for this?

  • Hi ionknight, I just sent you an email to help you delete everything linked to your account. Please reply directly to that email and I can continue helping you there.

@thehongkongkid — WordPress.com does not reuse or recycle site addresses, so you’ll need to either contact the site owners through their sites or choose a new, unique address for your site. You may also want to consider using a custom domain name, which can sometimes offer a name that isn’t available as a *.wordpress.com address. If you have any other questions or concerns about that, please start a new forum thread about it.
