People who want to comment are forced to sign in

Hi, I searched and couldn’t find an answer to this in forums or support.

In my comment settings there are the following options:

    * Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
    * Users must be registered and logged in to comment

NEITHER of those are checked off and neither has EVER been checked off, and yet readers complain to me that they’re forced to sign in to WordPress to leave a comment. As a result, I rarely get comments anymore when I used to get 10+ per post. This has been going on for about a year and I just kept thinking it’s a WordPress kink that’ll get worked out on its own.

Please help. I really miss the interesting discussions and feedback I would get in comments. I pay extra for custom domain and No-Ads and am generally satisfied with my WordPress.com experience, but this is one thing that is really bothering me.

    Thank you.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.

You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That’s easy to do. You copy and paste this into a text widget:

Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

P.S. Do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I have changed the comment prompt so my readers know they don’t have to sign in, etc.

    Best wishes,
    Tracy
