    Does the payment happen immediately after registration… Meaning do I need to have sufficient funds when upgrading?

    You need to have sufficient funds in your bank account or card to complete the transaction for upgrading your account.

    Yes, the amount from your debit or credit card is immediately deducted if you Upgrade your account or register a domain through WordPress.com

    Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new custom domain or map one you already own.
    Additional domain mapping costs $13/year.

    And you don’t need to make payment for the “Free” plan which is free to use without adding your debit or credit card.
