No more preview text at automated facebook nor twitter blog posts since 16.09

  • Since yesterday my automatic re-posts on fb/twitter are without the typical text-preview. I have not made any change in posting. What happened?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi berndheinen,

Is getestet.blog the site that you’re having issues with?

I visited your FB (https://www.facebook.com/getestet.blog/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/getestet_blog) and noticed that your recent posts are showing both an image and preview text for posts from the last 24 hours.

Are you still having this issue or has it been resolved? If the issue still exists, please post some links that we can review.

    Thanks,
    James

  • Hi James, thanks a lot. If you compare the previous post (Skip-Bo) with the following (AEG or JBL) you will see the difference. There’s no more preview blog post text teaser above the picture with just Headline and Link to the blog. I don’t know how to insert a screenshot to show you directly but I believe you can see what I mean with the explanation above. Thanks in advance, bernd

  • Hi berndheinen,

Thanks for replying and apologies that I didn’t fully grasp the issue. :)

Now I see what you mean! Are you using WordPress.com’s Publicize feature or do you have a Business plan site and are using a plugin for sharing posts to social media?

For myself to replicate the text above picture and link that you previously had in your social media posts, I need to follow the steps outlined here for Publicize – https://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#using-publicize.

If you scroll down a bit you’ll get to a section with an image that describes,

You can also customize the message that introduces your post on your services:

    .

Is this the step that you’re missing?

  • Hi James, I typically use the mobile Version but to be sure I checked the desktop ui as well. No changes and no differences between Skip-Bo posts and the following. Yes it’s publicize sharing feature that is used. No idea why the output changed since saturday…

  • Hello @berndheinen,

I have been researching this strange change in display to see what I can find out. It does appear that the Open Graph tags for your posts are now being generated slightly differently in the Publicize tool, which I think is the source of the difference. You can see these tags when you “View Source” in your browser, underneath the line `<!–Jetpack Open Graph Tags–>

For instance, the Skip-Bo post has the tag <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary">, while the AEG post has the tag <meta name="twitter:card" content="photo">

A couple of potential suggestions I have found for others troubleshooting the Publicize feature include:

    1. Disconnecting and reconnecting your social media accounts in the WordPress.com Publicize interface.

    2. If you have any Plugins installed in your site (this would be if you have a Business plan, as only Business WordPress.com plans can install third-party plugins) – an update to one of them could affect these tags. There is a list of plugins that are known to affect/override Jetpack’s open graph tags.

Here is a little more info on troubleshooting Publicize (it refers to the WordPress.org version, Jetpack, which you already have installed automatically as a WordPress.com user).

It is possible that disconnecting then reconnecting social media accounts could make a difference. If you do have third-party plugins installed on your site, let us know as that could aid in further troubleshooting.

    Thank you!

  • Hey, thx a lot. I haven’t changed anything nor ad anything between last week and today. I just published a post out of my drafts and the preview text is surprisingly in again. What the f*** happened on Saturday. I just use the mobile UI and make everything exactely as all the time before… this is really strange. Curious how it will last…

  • That is extremely weird!

If the unexpected Publicize format change happens again, please do let us know about it on this thread and we will bring it to a staff member’s attention!

  • Hi berndheinen,

A quick update and some inside scoop that apparently Publicize was causing some issues with Twitter/FB the last few days, but it should be resolved as of now. As you’ve noted by the fact that your recent post had no issues. :)

As @uxcitizen mentioned – if it happens again, please post. If you’d like a staff member’s attention on it, you can always use the modlook tag and they’ll answer in due time.
