New theme in a total blog rework

  • My blog is a year old & approaching 300 posts. At this rate of posting my current theme, Kubrick, is becoming unwieldy for what I want to do and I’ve found one that’s better suited.

My question is how can I switch to a new theme I’ve chosen but make the change “behind the curtains” and not have to switch immediately? What I’d like to do is to copy the current blog contents to a new theme but not publish the new version until all of the kinks have been worked out. Once it’s ready to go then I’d like to have it replace the current blog in one fell swoop.

    Is this possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When we change themes there is a “preview” we can use to view what the blog would look like if we click “activate” and change to a new theme.

If what you mean is that you want to change the theme on your existing blog at http://edkphoto.wordpress.com/ and then click a button so readers cannot see the change while you work on the blog that’s not possible unless you change the blog visibilty to “private” temporarily.

  • I also forgot to say we have a new live demo Themes Showcase here now > http://theme.wordpress.com/

  • Yes, I’m familiar with the preview option but the changes that I need to make are fairly extensive and will take several days at least. I’d rather avoid having the blog either off line or unusable for that length of time.

In a perfect world what I’d envision doing is the equivalent of a “save as….” to create a 2nd copy of my blog to work with (in “private”). Once the rework was done, then I’d replace the original with the new.

I expected this wasn’t possible but thought I’d ask to be sure. I’ll just have to figure another way to do it.

    Thanks for your time :-)

  • You can do the “save as” by Exporting your blog and Importing it into another blog (URL) – set the new one to Private and change away –

when the changes are done you have two choices – if you have domain Mapping reMap the name – if you don’t have Domain Mapping then go back and knowing exactly what changes you want to make – change your first blog to the new settings – you want to avoid messing with the URL at any cost – I don’t think there is a “Transfer Theme Settings” but if you have figured out the changes the resetting the first site to the new look should not take much time at all – just put a Post at the top that says “Under Construction” your regular visitors should not mind.

  • Thanks. I’ll take a look at what you suggest,
