  I thought I could try the site for free. I seem to be asked to sign up for anual costs etc.

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Can you please share more details on where are you asked to pay for annual costs?

  If you have already chosen your free domain and you are asked to choose a plan, you can scroll down on the same page and select your free plan as shown on this screenshot: https://prnt.sc/26j5cxg

  When creating a new site, you can skip the prompts for choosing a custom domain and upgrading to a paid plan. There is a free plan available, as shown here:
