Moving to self-hosted. What happens to followers and subscribers?
I will be moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org in the next few days and would like to know if there is a way to move over either the following:
1. Subscribers who have subscribed to my blog using the “Follow Blog” widget in the sidebar
2. Followers who follow my blog via the wordpress.com reader or via email through wordpress.com
My domain name will not change as I have used my own while on wordpress.com. The domain will continue to be anuneducatedpalate.com. Only the name servers and blogging platform will change.
Also, I have enjoyed participating in the Weekly Photo Challenge while on wordpress.com. Is there any way I will still be able to participate when I move to wordpress.org?
Thanks very much.
The blog I need help with is anuneducatedpalate.com.
Your site will not be visible on the WordPress.com reader if you leave WordPress.com.
I don’t know the details of the weekly photo challenge, so I can’t help with that.
If you install the Jetpack plugin on your new site, apparently all your RSS and email subscribers will follow you to the new destination.
Okay thanks a lot for your help raincoaster!
Email subscribers I think will have to be moved over for you by staff. It isn’t automatic at this point. After installing Jetpack, post back here and ask that staff move your subscribers over to your self-hosted installation. Make sure and include a link to your site here, and to the new self-hosted site so that they get the right things to the right place.
Really? That’s outstandingly tedious, but I will try to remember it.
I’ve installed Jetpack and will post back here when I’m ready to move the subscribers over to my self-hosted installation, but I’m not sure how to include the link to both sites since the domain isn’t changing. The old site will be http://anuneducatedpalate.com and the new site will also be http://anuneducatedpalate.com. The only difference is the platform and the name servers. I’ll be sure and include that.
I hate to lose my followers who read my blog through the WordPress reader or through email from wordpress.com, but that’s why I think the time to do it is now, when the numbers are still small. I’ll be sure and post a few days before hand letting them know I’m moving and point out all the other options than they can use to follow me (RSS, email subscriptions, follow me on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, or through a blog reading service like Blog Lovin’. Hopefully some of them will follow my ‘over to the other side :-)
Interacting with the community hear and building friendships was a wonderful experience, one that I’m sure I will miss on wordpress.org.
I’ll come back to this thread once I’ve completed the move, and request the staff move over the subscribers.
Thank you rain coaster and thesacredparth. You guys rock!
The follower thing is a wordpress.COM internal thing and the people will have to “follow” your new site some other way, such as by email, or perhaps by RSS feed.
I’ve installed Jetpack and am ready to have my email subscribers moved over but I’m not sure how to flag this for staff?
I’ll do that for you. :)
excellent! thank you :-)
I have moved your subscribers as requested.
Please let us know if you need any further assistance!
that was fast! thanks a lot!
I’m having the same problem. Could you also move my followers, please?
