Modifying blog post categories

    I just started a free WordPress.com blog and I want to change my post categories but can’t find any information about how to do that. Everything I find online relates to WordPress.org and describes the premium dashboard which I don’t have. I can add new categories but there doesn’t seem to be any way to then rename them or change the hierarchy. Am I missing something or is this only a premium feature?

    Hello dbamateurhuman,

    Within our support pages there is a site all about categories. I will post the link below, but I am copy and pasting the part I think is relevant to you:
    Managing Categories

    The Posts -> Categories page in your dashboard displays all your categories and shows the name, description, and number of posts belonging to each category. If you move your mouse over a category a set of options will appear, allowing you to edit, quick-edit, or delete that category:

    If you click on Quick Edit the category will change into an edit box and you can rename the category quickly:

    If you click on Edit you will taken to a separate page where you can edit the name, parent, and description. This functions exactly the same as adding a category.

    Clicking on Delete will delete that category. When a category is deleted, all posts that were only in that category will be assigned to the default category. If a post was also in other categories it will remain untouched.

    Thanks for taking the time to help. As I mentioned in my original post, this relates to the WordPress.org Dashboard which I don’t have access to because I am not paying for my hosting. I don’t have a Categories page in the light blue menu on the left, only Blog Posts and Pages. The only place I find anything about Categories is when editing a post I am given the option to add a category or select from the existing list but nothing comes up to allow editing of any other categories.

    Is there a way to access the Dashboard that I haven’t found? I have tried clicking everything I can see.

    By chance I have now found how to access the Dashboard. There is no obvious way to do so whatsoever by I accidentally clicked on the box-and-arrow icon beside Testimonials in the only interface I’d yet found and suddenly was transported to the elusive Dashboard. I don’t know how I was ever supposed to find it otherwise. Still, all is well. I’ll make sure to bookmark it for the future!
