Migrating from WordPress.org to WordPress.com
-
Hello,
I can find many helpful threads and links for migrating from wordpress.com to wordpress.org, or from other blog formats to wordpress.com.
Yet I’m not finding advice for moving from wordpress.org to wordpress.com. Might someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction?
Thanks you! Bill

@Bill:
There are very (very, very) few people who would think of migrating from a self-hosted wp (back?) to wp.com. That said, I believe the export facility is available for the self-hosted wp too.You just have to export everything from your self-hosted wp and import them here at wp.com. You may experience a few hiccups but should settle down fine.
Try it, if any problems, post back here. :-)

This is the basic guide for moving from WordPress.org blog to a WordPres.com blog.

You probably want to move your existing domain – you can do that with a Domain Mapping upgrade. Here’s a support page for the instruction:

Good luck!
If you run into any issues, feel free to ask questions. -
Hi Bill,
Please read this first so your are clear on the differences and understand there is no FTP access to wordpress.com blog so no themes or plugins can be uploaded into them. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/The only themes we wordpress.com blogger can use are found here > Dashboard > Appearance > Themes
This is the link to the main widgets page and you can use the links on it to find information and installation instructions for widgets > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebarsRegarding moving content It’s the same thing in reverse. See here for specific instructions > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-org
Note that your blogroll links must be separately exported and imported > http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/import-export-links/

Thanks for replying Sterex.
Re: migrating, I imagine so, but the economy is forcing me to economize.
I’ve read up on making a backup of the current blog, and how to upload it to wordpress.com.
I’m trying to figure out how to migrate the images, and css files I tweaked. Plus anything else that someone like me should know up front.
Cheers!

The terms of service are worth reading very closely

The images are attachments and when you created the XML export file you had an option of checkmarking an option to have them included in the export file.
Your CSS is useless here. CSS is theme specific ate wordpress.com. I think it’s important to know that wordpress.com is a WP-MU blogging platform. Most themes here were all originally coded to run on free standing wordpress.org software installs. In order to run on wordpress.com software they were “adapted” and some features were eliminated as this is a WP_MU blogging platform we cannot access and edit the underlying php and html in the templates. The themes we use here are all derived from shared templates. You cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes or versions of themes from wordpress.ORG with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

@Bill:
Images ‘maybe’ an issue, where you may have to bulk upload them all and then re-insert them into particular posts. (I’m not sure on this – maybe someone more experienced can help)But CSS definitely is a problem. You cannot edit the theme’s CSS unless you pay for the upgrade. Hope the economy allows that? ;-)
Also, you may not be able to use your custom theme here. If you had extra tweaked PHP codes (including plugins), they will have to go. No scope of installing additional plugins either.
