Mari Language

  • Dear colleagues,

I’m writing on behalf of speakers of the Mari language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mari_language) currently using WordPress, I would like to request adding the two Mari literary standards, Meadow Mari (ISO 639-3: mhr, “олык марий”) and Hill Mari (ISO 639-3:mrj, “кырык мары”) as options in both the blogging language list as well as offering the option to localise the interface into those languages, Volunteers exist, both to translate and validate strings.

These two languages/language variants share more than half a million speakers between them, and are being actively blogged in already now. I do believe that offering these languages would help improve your services.

    Sincerely,

    Jeremy Bradley

  • Are you volunteering to be a translator?

  • I am a journalist and a native speaker of the Meadow variant of the Mari language. My Mari-language blog can be found at http://mariuverm.wordpress.com/
I can validate Meadow Mari translations.

  • Thanks so much for letting us know that. Staff will reply to you when they can. :)

  • I myself offer my help as a consultant – as there are native speakers willing to do this, having them do the actual translating/validating is a better solution, but as a native speaker of English that is competent in Mari, I can help them with iffy phrases and the such. (Just in case this helps making a case for including Mari)

  • “Hill” and “Meadow” have got to be the most beautiful variant names yet :)

I’ve added support for both languages and also added marivienna and mariuver as validators. Thank you and welcome!
