Login errors don't seem to be handled correctly

I’ve got an account where I don’t login all that often. What just happened was

    In Firefox –
Go to wordpress.com and click Login
    Enter username/password
Get tossed back to wordpress.com home page (no error message)
    Repeat
    Click lost your password link
Get email with link to reset password
Copy/paste the link into Firefox address bar
Try to reset password to the one I was trying above
Get a message that I can’t use that recently used password again

    Switch over to chrome
Logout of the wordpress.com account that I usually have logged in there (it’s my default browser)
Try the same login credentials that failed in Firefox.
    Works like a champ.

So this has happened often enough that I’m wondering if something could be improved in the login code.

I realize this wouldn’t be an easy issue to track down, so I’m not expecting any “support”, but I thought it should be reported. You can also reach me through the WP.com account nes49.

Thanks for this report! I haven’t been able to recreate this, and I use Firefox quite often. Can you check that you have third party cookies enabled by visiting this link:

    Preview Problems and Third-Party Cookies

There are directions on that page to enable them if the in-browser check says you’ve got them disabled.

Can you also try clearing your cache and cookies in Firefox?

Okey, doke. 3rd party cookies were enabled correctly and clearing the cache wasn’t enough, but I cleared my WordPress.com cookies and that seemed to do the trick.

A simpler way to describe the symptom as I understand it now:

Login with correct credentials — and instead of seeing the dashboard, I see the wordpress.com splash page (with Log In in the upper right).

Login with incorrect credentials –get an error message and the Login form again.

    Thanks!

Now that you’ve cleared your cookies are you still seeing the splash page at WordPress.com when logged in?

    Sorry, I wasn’t clear.

Yes, clearing the cookies allowed me to login from Firefox.

Great! It sounds like there may have been an expired cookie that was causing issues. Sometimes browsers fail to clean up old cookies and it can cause issues like this.

Let me know if you see this happen again!
