Importing .xml file problem
-
I have an 80mb xml file I was trying to import into this new site. It seems to be stuck. Progress bar spinning but nothings changes in the last 12 hours. Also all photos are missing. What should I do?

As far as I’m aware there is a 15MB limit on the file size you can import into a WordPress.com site. (It still says so in the wp-admin dashboard but oddly I can’t see any mention of the file size in the Calypso dashboard). I have added the modlook tag to ask staff to reset your importer. You may need to look at splitting the file into smaller pieces. Also, regarding the images, is the site you are exporting them from still online?

That could be a problem. The site you are exporting from needs to still be online. An xml file doesn’t contain images, only links to the images on the original site. The images are transferred as you carry out the import to the new site.

On your xml file, I’ve not used any of these in a long time, but there are Windows and Mac splitters discussed in this article. What you might try would be to make a copy of your original file and then working off the copy, see if the splitter works and you can import the smaller files.

Actually this is the splitter I used on Mac. I would give this a try and then let us know. I would recommend less than 5mb per file, which I know is a lot, but when you start to get close to that 15mb, server timeouts and other things can upset your apple cart unexpectedly.

The Sacredpath – Both those links take you to information stating there are no xml spillers for Macs.

?? Both links say the opposite. First link:
Hey mac user don’t get disappointed you have the similar utility for you named WordPress WXR Split utility . This performs the same thing that windows version do.
The second link says:
Sadly, at the time of this writing, none seems to be available for the Mac platform. That was a bummer.
I had some free time. So, I wrote one. Let me know what you think.
