Imported my old blog – traffic?

  • Hi! I’ve imported my old blog to my new one and I was wondering…

    – I get +-100 visitors on my old blog each day. These come from google search terms mostly (searching for tags I have on my posts)
    – If I delete all my posts on the old blog..
    – …will these ‘old’ visitors find my new blog instead?

In other words; will my new blog have the same traffic as the old one as I have imported all the old posts? And therefor is it safe to delete all the posts on my old blog?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi. In regards to the traffic volume after transferring the blog from one address to the other, the following thread might answer some questions regarding the volume of Google traffic:

You are also asking if your visitors will find your blog. As far as I know, that depends most importantly on where the blog is hosted and whether or not it has some way of redirecting visitors to the old address.

I’ll now let another volunteer fill in more details to the basic information I gave :-)

  • Do you have a redirect on your old site? If so, then visitors will automatically be diverted to your new site. Otherwise, they have no way of finding the new site unless you put up a static Page as your landing page with a link to the new site.

  • Thank you for your answers, however I will try to explain my question more carefully.

My old blog had x posts, these posts had x tags which would send me x traffic each day.
My new blog has imported all these x posts and x tags, so each post and tag is now on my old and new blog.
If I were to now delete all posts and tags on my old blog wouldnt people searching on google for tag x find my new blog instead? (since all the posts have moved there?)

  • EDIT: I have now made my old blog private and will start my new pagerank from scratch.

  • If you delete the Posts on your old site and have one Page / Post that says “We moved to..” then visitors would then know where to go to – not all your traffic will be from search engines – your site should get repeat traffic based on what looks like a game –

I would be cautious about slamming the door in their face – I still get a bit of traffic to my site to Posts that I have moved based on a 6 month old email I sent out with links to pictures – the old link still works but there is a click on link to where I have moved the pictures to.

Don’t dump on your regular visitors or make it hard for them to find you.

  • Thanks. What I will do is leave the posts on my old blog, but delete all the content and instead of the article I will have a link – ‘this article has moved here’ – redirecting them to my new blog.

    Is that an idea?

  • Sounds like a good plan to me – the search engines will slowly learn that there is no content on your old site and your new site will move up because of the new Posts – @RC & @TSP might have more ideas – but this way nobody gets lost and no getting dinged for duplicate content

    good luck
