Import Media Files from existing site

  • I’m trying to copy my self-hosted WordPress site to WordPress.com. I’ve just uploaded my xml file containing pages, posts etc and I’m awaiting my site to be created. My question is once my site is set up how will I be able to get it to upload my media files? My new site will be brianpears.wordpress.com and my existing one is http://www.bpears.org.uk

  • What is the size of the XML file, please?
Is the site you have the XML export file from still online?
If yes, what is the URL?

Sometimes the importer gets stuck. If the file is large you may have to import Posts, Pages, etc. in separate files. Or if the file is very large Staff may have to do the import.

  • Hi Thank you very much for your reply. Actually I think I have made a dreadful mistake. I just assumed that the import of Media was something I’d have to do separately, but when I sign into WordPress.com and go to My Site, I see that the Media files are actually imported. I’ll have to wait until the site is live to see that everything is OK. Sincere apologies to you you and the staff for wasting your time. For the record the XML is 2.4 Mb and the current site is http://www.bpears.org.uk. Brian
Apologies again – I do get flustered and confused with set ups etc. Also I’m unwell which is why I’m probably closing down all my self-hosted stuff.

  • No problem and best wishes.

  • You’re welcome. :)
