Import has stuck, need to cancel it
-
I’ve had the message “Importing takes 15 minutes or a while longer if your site has a lot of media.” for the last 24 hours.
My xml file, from a self hosted wordpress site, is 34Mb, which I have now read may be too big, and so I will try again with smaller files. But I need to stop the import, so I can start again.
I am importing into abcdiamond.wordpress.com
Thanks

Hi there,
This looks like a browser issue. Can you please try the following things:
* Clear your browser’s cache
* Force refresh the page
* Log-out from your WordPress.com account and log-in again.
If that doesn’t work then please check your browser settings or use another browser. You can read more about how to troubleshoot your browser issues here:I’ve also added the modlook tag so the staff can offer you further assistance.
Hope this helps!

Hi there, the max upload for an XML is around 15MB, so smaller files are better. Staff will clear out your existing import so you can try again with the smaller files.
I also noticed that your site at abcdiamond.wordpress.com is using one of the oldest WordPress themes around (Kubrick!), which is long since been retired. Retired themes are not updated to support WordPress’ latest features so you’ll want to also look for a new theme when you can https://wordpress.com/themes/ You can use the feature filter there, but let us know if you want suggestions.

Hi folks, thanks for your help here.
@assadaboultaif in this case it really was stuck on our end, so if you see similar issues feel free to flag us down with the “modlook” tag :) We can clear the stuck import here & can often access more details to see what went wrong.
@abcdiamond I have a few recommendations:
– You’ll want to be sure your WordPress installation is up to date. I’m seeing errors here about invalid files, and if your old installation hasn’t been updated for a few years that could be part of your trouble. If you can’t get you code up to date, let us know; we’ll see what we can do.
– Try going through to clear out spam / unapproved spammish comments prior to making the export.
– If you still end up with a file larger than 15MB, there are automated WXR splitters that will break them into smaller chunks for you, or staff can help at your request.
Cheers :)

Thanks for that. I will have a look at all those points.
Looks like the first thing I should do is change the theme. It looks like I created this some years ago, but never actually really used it.
I may come back regarding file size once I look at it properly.
Thanks

I have just noticed that the import option still shows: Importing takes 15 minutes or a while longer if your site has a lot of media. You can safely navigate away from this page if you need to: we’ll send you a notification when it’s done..
I am not ready to import again, but I assume that problem hasn’t gone away yet.I did log out and in again.

@abcdiamond hm, okay. Sounds like the import indicator is stuck, too. We’ll be working on that. If you get your import files ready before then, let us know; we can do it on our end.
