You must go to the registrar that you purchased you domain name from to renew that purchase every year.

To renews the domain mapping upgrade your purchase from WordPress.com every year you go to > Store > My Upgrades.

Nope! The person who originally purchased the site (a non-profit site) is no longer available. I just want to contact WP to arrange for the ownership to be moved … can’t find any way to contact them.

Ergo, when I open My Upgrades there is no provision to pay.

WordPress.com does not accept incoming domain name transfers.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#transferring-a-domain-to-wordpress-com

All upgrades can only be renewed by the same username accounts that purchased them. You must contact that person and they must post here to notify Staff that they wish to make the transfer of the domain mapping upgrade to another username account.

Sorry for the grammar, but I have been building cms systems for some time now (several years), and find this a bit frustrating. I have never before worked through a provider like WordPress, and I have to say I’m not very impressed.

… and not that impressive. Of course, I’m a Joomla type and have inherited this site. It is a chance to expand my horizons, I guess.
