  • Thank you for your response but I don’t think you understood what I said. The original post is closed so how can I ask questions. Had I been able to do so I wouldn’t have created a new thread. I can’t respond to your last message because you have closed that as well. You also closed the first thread. So I’m having to create yet another just so i can reply to your post. There has been no response from anybody. That message was left the last time. If you can’t or won’t help then don’t worry about it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I assume you can still access your account as you continue to post into this forum. Can you change your password? https://en.support.wordpress.com/passwords/
I’ve added a modlook tag for staff again.

  • Hi there,

You asked in your previous thread if there was someone you could talk to in private. The Terms of Service Team would be the department that would handle your issue and can reach out to them here through our abuse form:

    http://en.wordpress.com/abuse/

They will look over everything you tell them and will be able to assist you in this matter.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you both for your responses. Yes I can get into my account. However the visual side of my blog stops me from altering anything which means someone has changed the permissions. I cannot access the folders to change them back again. The HTML side is however working ok. This is not the first time they have attacked the blog. There has been no abuse other than the hacking. So is there anyone who can reset the folder permission settings or lock them?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hey again,

What is the name of the URL? It sounds like you are not referring to soulboytales.wordpress.com, but rather a self-hosted site, is that correct? Who hosts your site? That is who you should reach out in regards to this issue. If we are not the hosts of the site, there is nothing we can directly do since we do not have access to your account.

To clear up any confusion, self-hosted WordPress sites and WordPress.com are two, different entities, but the essential difference is that we don’t have access to all WordPress sites, only ones hosted on our WordPress.com servers. For more information, please see:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Thanks,

  • Thanks for the response,

    The url is https://soulboytales.wordpress.com.
Is this not one of yours?

  • I see what you mean. no it’s not a self hosting site. You are hosting the site,

  • Okay, thanks for confirming. I checked the account and did not see any signs of hacking, but what we can do is have you contact our account recovery team and see if they can assist you in the matter.

Please email them at passwordhelp@wordpress.com and they’ll see what they can do to get your content back.

If you have access to your account but suspects someone has hacked it, I would also advise adding two step authentication for the extra layer of security

    Enable Two-Step Authentication

    Thanks,

  • Hi again,
    Thanks for the response. When you say you didn’t find any signs of hacking. I am unable to use the visual editor which sounds as if the file settings have been changed. Here is an example i found;
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/visual-editor-not-working-in-wordpress-45/page/2/
Is there no way you can reset these permissions ? or do the account recovery team have to do it. Yes setting up the two step verification is a good idea. Thanks.

  • It also keeps telling me there is a more recent version of the blog when I log in when I know there isn’t one.

  • Hi there,

There is no way to change the file settings for a site on WordPress.com. The thread you link to above are from the WordPress.org forums, and refer to sites using the open source WordPress software made by the community on that website. Those sites do not work the same way as sites on WordPress.com.

The only way someone can “hack” your WordPress.com site, is if they managed to gain access to your WordPress.com account, and the only way that’s possible is if they knew your password or had access to your email account so they’re able to reset your password.

It also keeps telling me there is a more recent version of the blog when I log in when I know there isn’t one.

That is not an indication of hacking. That’s just something that happens with the editor sometimes when an autosave becomes stuck in the system. Try clearing your browser cache. If that doesn’t work, make a small change to the post where you’re seeing that, and click Update, and you shouldn’t see that any more.

If that doesn’t work, please give a link to the specific post where this is happening so we can take a look.

  • Hi,
Thanks for the quick response and the explanation. I was just wondering why I can no longer highlight text in the visual editor. And they did gain access to my password once but I changed it. I will give all the above a try and let you know. Thanks again!

  • Hello again,
The visual editor is still non responsive. I even tried another browser. I also tried on a machine running linux. I copied and pasted the html onto a new post and still the same result. Unable to use the visual editor. This is the post:

  • londonsoulhead –

    Good morning!

I was just wondering why I can no longer highlight text in the visual editor

Please send me the link from your address bar of the page you are at when trying to highlight text. That’s going to tell me which version of the editor you are using (there are several). You can also try clicking on the … in the upper right hand corner of the post editing screen, then look towards the bottom of the menu for the option labeled, “switch to classic editor”.

What piece of text are you trying to highlight. I’d like to try it from my side of things to see if it works properly. This will tell us if there’s something weird going on in the system or if it is something localized to your set up.

Please let me know which type of operating system your computer has and the version number. We’d also like to know what browsers and version numbers you’ve had this highlighting issue occur in.

Run a speed test as well, this way we can rule out your internet connection as the problem. Use https://speedtest.net/ and share those results.

  • Hello again,
Thanks for your response. I think you’ve solved the problem! The version. I updated the version and it now seems to be working. I can now highlight and change text in the visual editor as well as HTML. Basically it wouldn’t let me change anything on the page in the visual editor at all. It seems I was using the old version which has been running perfectly up until a couple of days ago. Everything seems to be running ok at the moment. These guys have hacked computers and phones so I thought they were up to their old tricks again. Thats why I suspected sabotage. I very much appreciate all of you who took time out to assist me. I’m now going to upgrade service plan. Thanks to everyone involved for all your help, I can continue my work :)

  • Glad that Liz was able to assist you with this issue!

  • Yes thanks to Liz but you also played your part in helping my work Darnel. Thanks a lot:)
