Help with changing theme, sub domain, and accessing database

    I currently have a wordpress theme that makes use of a database with tons and tons of articles and pictures in it and I plan on updating my wp theme with a new one. I don’t want to edit my new wp theme live and I’d like to see it as it will be while I work on it.

    I plan on setting up a sub domain to work from and upload my wordpress to it, however I don’t know how to access the original files on my original page. (Basically I’m hoping to see it working with all of the original files before I activate it) does anyone know how to do this?

    Also I wanted to make sure I understand this correctly. After I’ve made the customizations to my wp theme, I can export it to my desktop, then import it to my original theme, then activate?

    Thanks in advance. Sorry this is my first time changing a wordpress and I am not familiar with how they work, however I am pretty decent with standard web dev

    Are you talking about http://sidneyeubanks.wordpress.com/? On WordPress.com blogs, we don’t have access to the underlying databases or php files at all. You cannot work on their themes offline; you can only add changes to the CSS via the Custom Design upgrade, and that only changes the CSS.

    You have more freedom with an independently hosted blog using software from WordPress.org. IF this is what you’re talking about, you need to be at WordPress.org for answers with that.

    Hello raincoaster,
    Thanks for taking the time to respond. I only made that wp so I could post here. It’s on a separate account. I will be changing from my old custom theme(which I have access to the database) to a new one. There are literally thousands of articles and images on it.

    So you know how’d id be able to access that data from a sub domain? Thanks again

    Wouldn’t an export and then an import of your blog work? There are quite a few free plug-ins that would help you do that.

    You cannot export a WordPress.COM theme and use it on a WordPress.ORG site and the reverse is also true. You cannot export a WordPress.ORG theme and use it on a WordPress.COM site. Are you clear on that?

    Most of the bloggers posting here are beginners. Also be aware that about 30% of bloggers who post here for support are actually WordPress.ORG bloggers posting to the wrong support forums.

    That is why it is important to verify every URL referred to and where every blog referred to is hosted right up front.

    It’s also important to be clear on that fact that we provide support only for WordPress.COM hosted blogs and we do not confuse any bloggers by stepping over the line and providing WordPress.ORG support. We politely and kindly redirect all of those who are lost to the WordPress.ORG support forums, in the event that the blogger is referring to a WordPress.ORG install.

    Do not be sad for me. I was brought back to life literally by paramedics and doctors and now I’m pursuing my music with passion. i am, so happy to be singing again that I weep after almost every session.

    Yes, I will be slowly backing away from volunteering here over the next few months and yes, I will be history come summer time, but not to worry. If you use the forum tag search you will discover I am a thread tagger and almost every question asked here has been asked and answered before. If you do not get results form forum tags searches and from the support doc searches, then use Google search. Every thread here is indexed withing minutes of being created and/or updated. In addition, my blog linked to my username that has a No-Ads upgrade and is being domain mapped is chock full of over 1,000 published posts that you can access, if you want or need to. I renewed the upgrades on it for one year only.

    Ok so i want to be clear, I don’t know the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. I also want to be clear that I don’t know what plugins to use etc. (thats why i am here) I have a domain that is a .com domain and when i go to my domain.com/admin it takes me to my wordpress backend and i work from there.

    I am creating a subdomain to work from, uploading my new wp theme to it so i can edit it there. How do i access the database that my regular domain is accessing? thanks again

    since Plugin’s are not allowed here nor is database access allowed you will not get any help with those things here –

    You need to make friends at WordPress.ORG if that is the software you are using (sounds like that is what you are doing) –

    but without the REAL URL you need help with we can’t even confirm that you are in the wrong forum
