Free up a domain name

  • Hi I want to change our site name to thepieces.wordpress.com but despite this site not being used as it has been deleted, it says the name is unavailable. Please can you make it available so I can use it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • It’s not for SLTipping, btw, but another site I have

  • thepieces.wordpress.com is no longer available.
The authors have deleted this site.

Only the owner of that site had the option to recover the address, and even then it is something they can only ask staff to do within 30 days of the address being deleted. Perhaps you could choose a similar address with a different free subdomain such as .home.blog or similar.

  • It doesn’t let me it only gives me the option of .wordpress.com

  • Yes. That might not work if you’re wanting to change an existing free .wordpress.com address. It should work if you create an additional free site though. In that case you’d use “blog” at step 1 when creating a site. Then you’d need to export import content from your first site to your new site.

  • So why is it this way? Doesn’t seem very sustainable that once someone deletes a site domain and then doesn’t reinstate it neither they or anyone else can use it ever again. Who made that rule? Or, who hasn’t challenged that rule?

  • It’s all to do with impersonation. Say I delete my site and you were able re-activate the same address. You could put obscenities or pornography or whatever there. Visitors expecting to find my site would be faced with something very different.
(That scenario is something that frequently happens when people don’t or forget to renew custom domains with often serious consequences). WordPress.com’s policy is to let deleted addresses stay deleted to avoid any potential future conflict and unpleasantness.

  • Oh ok – naturally I wouldn’t think of that given it never crossed my mind
